"So Evans, who are you going to the Yule Ball with?"
Lily looked up from her book and frowned. Potter had some nerve speaking to her like that? Why did he want to know who she was going with anyway? He had no business asking her that. Besides, she would never admit to him, that no one had asked her yet.
Instead of answering his question, she glared at him in response.
"None of your business," she said after a few moments of staring him down. Evidently, he would not budge without an answer, so she gave him one.
"Actually, it is my business. Because if no one has taken you, I'd like to be the lucky guy. So, what do you say?"
Lily stared at him in disbelief. Hearing some chuckles behind him, she tilted her head to find his entire group of friends doubling up with laughter at her reaction.
"I'd rather go alone than go with you!" Lily exclaimed, closing her book with a snap. He raised an eyebrow at her.
"Come on. You know you really want to say yes..." he was beginning again, but thankfully Alice walked upto them that very moment. Lily almost sighed in relief.
"Is there a problem, Potter?" Alice asked, sharply.
"Nope. I was just convincing your friend to come to the Yule Ball with me."
Alice rolled her eyes. "Why don't you move along and ask one of the girls who are always hanging aroumd your arm as if they're trying to get a piece of you?"
James chuckled. "Now where's the fun in that?" He turned to Lily. "Say yes, Evans, and I'll show you the time of your life," he said, a smug smile on his face.
Within moments, however, it had been wiped from his face, and there was a red handprint blooming on his cheek. Lily decided he looked much better like that, before stalking away.
Behind her, James looked at the floor with a smile.
"Next time..." he whispered.
