I Dreamt of Murder

Prologue

Ryuuzaki Sakuno was like any normal girl. She liked flowery things, liked pink, had long hair, liked to tie them into plaits, liked to go to school and meet her friends, liked to make bentoes, liked a certain tennis player.

Yes, she was a normal girl who grew up normally. And she did, moving on from her crush to her a full-blown relationship with yet another tennis player and enjoying her life as a normal young lady.

Or so we all thought.

She frowned and looked at her watch. He was late, yet again. Not that she mind waiting but she was not particularly fond of the bitter cold of the winter wind. A fine young lady of 24 years, her wispy auburn hair was down, inviting curious stares from the crowd.

"Saa, who is this lovely headturner? Doesn't she know it's dangerous to stand outside alone?" A warm breath tickled the nape of her neck as she spun around to meet her boyfriend.

"Ah, I thought I recognized the lady. My lover." Sakuno blushed and pouted.

"You're late." Yet, she smiled and put her arm around his. "And you're supposed to quit smoking!"

"Ah, I forgot." He drawled and threw the cigarette away immediately. He stopped and turned to look at Sakuno.

Sakuno inhaled in sharply, caught off-guard by the sudden movement. Her boyfriend was beautiful, almost angelic. But it was his eyes which betrayed him, a vast sea of glass which one could lose onself in. It does not take a genius to guess who he is- the only Japanese to make it to the People's 100 Beautiful People list.

"Did I tell you that I love you?" He kissed her and smiled.

It was little wonder she had been with him for the past 5 years.

While the wind howled outside the small, cozy apartment, Sakuno stirred in her sleep.

Sakuno was dreaming. She saw herself in a white room. It was so white it blinded her and she searched for a way to get out.

"Anou, anyone there? Fuji?" She asked desperately as she tried to search for a door. She groped around and to her relief, found a door knob. She turned it and opened the door.

Greeted with the sight of a field of sunflowers, she gasped. Sunflowers! Her favourite flowers! She walked on, elated and suddenly, she saw a figure in the distance. She squinted, hoping to see who it was but she could not. As she walked on, the figure came closer.

She gasped again when she saw who the figure was.

Ryoma Echizhen.

"Hello Ryuuzaki." Before she could respond, a shower of sunflowers came upon them and momentarily, she was blinded. Then it stopped. When she could see clearly again, she screamed.

Ryoma was crumpled on the floor, covered in blood and she realised she was holding a bloodied knife. And still... and still... the sunflowers were there, the field looking bright and cheery safe for the blood stained ones of those near Ryoma.

"Sakuno! Sakuno!" A voice called out urgently and she bolted up.

"Where am I!" She asked desperately as she clung to the blanket tightly. "Fuji!" She cried out when she recognized the face and held him instead. She started sobbing.

"It's ok. I'm here. I'm right next to you. No one else's here." His soothing voice calmed her down. Yes, she was at home. Their home and Fuji was next to her in their warm bed. He looked at her, worried. "Was it a nightmare?"

"Fuji…" She took in a deep breath to steady her voice. "I dreamt of murder."
