Since it's the 23rd century and Earth traditions have changed, holidays have also changed to fit the growing diversity of the planet. The religions and celebrations of alien species have intermingled with human beliefs over the years so the whole month of December is one big festive stew. The entire month is just a mess of candles, decorations, songs, gifts, and friends.
Ben Sulu can't wrap a present to save his life. He is famous for having colorful lumps of wrapping paper and tape that are impossible to get into. On the other hand, Hikaru is the gift wrapper extraordinaire. His presents are the kind that that have impeccably creased paper and tape so perfect you can't even see it. The first holiday they spent together Hikaru found out Ben was completely incapable of putting gifts nicely into paper, so he made him a deal. Hikaru would wrap all of Ben's gifts for him if he could come over for a movie marathon and some eggnog; Ben wholeheartedly agreed. The only one with horribly wrapped present that year was Hikaru. Ben wanted his gift to be a surprise.
In the years following Ben and Hikaru both made more friends, so the gift wrapping began to take longer and longer. Days wrapping presents and drinking eggnog became weekends. Fortunately, Hikaru usually had about two weeks in December off duty every year.
The first holiday season Ben and Demora were settled at Yorktown the Sulu family had a party at their house. When the festivities died down the gift exchanging began people started to notice the pristinely wrapped gifts. Even Spock was impressed. When Uhura finally asked who did the wrapping, Hikaru said Ben did it. He had panicked because he didn't want to give the Enterprise crew anymore more reasons to poke fun at him; they already gave him enough trouble for plants and the fencing.
As the night was finishing and everyone was leaving, Ben was getting a lot of last compliments on his wrapping jobs. Whenever Chekov or Uhura would say something Ben just nod and accept the praise; all while Hikaru some serious side eye.
Later that night, long after Demora had fallen asleep, Ben asked Hikaru why he hadn't told the truth. Hikaru just smiled and burrowed deeper into Ben's slightly oversized sweater he was wearing. Ben rolled his eyes and snuggled closer Hikaru. They both looked forward to next year as they drifted off to sleep together.
