The early morning sun beams down over the pier as Olivia aimlessly walks along the wooden deck. Her arms folded against her slim frame. Oversized sunglasses shield her eyes from the glare of the unwelcome sunlight. She vaguely notices random bystanders as they cheerfully go about their day seemingly without a care in the world.
She can't even think about being happy. She doubts she'll ever feel anything but sorrow ever again. Thoughts of her baby never leave her; her baby boy cruelly taken from her. Her grief consumes her, filling every part of her existence.
She reaches the end of the pier, leaning against the wooden framework, her forearms resting on the rail as she looks out over the water.
Her mind wanders back to the day of the birth. How happy she felt waking up next to Gregory. His arms around her holding her close to him, the slight linger of his cologne, as he whispered into her ear how much he loves her. Their hands entwined over her swollen stomach as they proudly felt the liveliness of their unborn son beneath her skin. She recalls the previous months they'd spent apart. A time when she'd allowed her head to overrule her heart. How Gregory had pursued her, begging her for another chance. His constant promises to love her and cherish her as she surrendered to his emotional pleas, her heart finally giving way to the notions in her head.
It didn't matter now though, nothing mattered. Gregory blames her; their son was dead and her husband holds her responsible. Accusing her of drinking, drinking excessively resulting in their son being stillborn. She never would have drank. She was happy. They were happy and finally getting their second chance to be the parents they'd always wanted to be.
Behind her she hears the cry of a child; her head turning around to the sound as she witnesses a young woman comforting her infant. Her eyes well up with tears as she turns back to see a blurry view of the ocean. That should be me she thinks to herself as hot tears run uncontrollably down her face.
She looks down, her forehead resting on the palms of her hands as she gazes into the dark water. She wonders how deep the water is. How easy would it be to just climb over the barrier and fall into the depths of oblivion? She wasn't a good swimmer and the actual thought of her head submerging under the water would have frightened her to her very core. But not today, today she didn't care. She didn't want to be here anymore, to carry on living without her baby. With her husband hating her or the pity she saw as she looked into Caitlin and Sean's eyes.
The strong swell lapped up against the pillars of the pier as Olivia stepped up and over the barrier; her feet teetering on the edge. She heard gasps and voices behind her but the water was her only focus as she let go of the railing allowing herself to fall. Descending until her body made contact with the cold water. The undercurrent pulled her down but she didn't fight against it; the glow from the waters surface gradually fading as she sank further away from life.
