Inscribed on the table are the words Fade Away,

Inscribed on the table are the words Fade Away,

I think I just might.

Staring at him from across the room,

I try to fade into the background

He doesn't seem to notice anyway.

To return his gaze seems too bizarre,

Wait!

Return his gaze?

It's gone to far for me to fade away

Steadily his gaze is matched,

He breaks the connection first.

I don't know whether to celebrate my small victory,

Or mourn my loss.

Instead I turn and laugh at something someone said,

What they said?

I'm not sure

All I can think about is his stare,

His steady, appreciative stare.

And I decide I like it too much to just fade away,

Like the table says.

So I stare,

And he stares back.
