When they were younger, back when they had only been children, they had hated each other in that way children do. They would attack each other, fight, and scream their heads off, but it was all in good fun (though their parents didn't think so). Not even Thorin or Frerin could keep the two from fighting. And yet, and yet when Dis thought of marriage, a strange idea to a child of her young age, she could only imagine it with him. If she was going to be a princess like from her books, then she wanted to save him from orcs or dragons like the girls in her books did.
2.
She had saved him from orcs. The battle was over, and all grieved. She walked over to Thorin, yelling at the top of her lungs for anyone else. Balin spoke, and so did Dwalin. Her grandfather, father, other brother, and husband did not. Whoever was left huddled together and waited for whatever Thorin would say next.
When she got home, back to her boys being watched by her old mother, she almost told them that they had another father. But worrying about that kind of thing was not needed now. It would take its time, and Dwalin had his own grief to deal with.
Still, she hoped that now they could finally act on what they felt. If she had to wait, she would.

Fili was declared Thorin's heir. It wasn't a surprise, but still they celebrated into the night. Dis drank too much and shed a few tears when recalling memories. All the while, she sat next to Dwalin, her oldest and closest friend. She nearly added another thing to celebrate.
Almost.
This was her son's night, and she wouldn't take away from the night he'd been anticipating his entire life for.

It took seeing to believe it, but Dis knew it. Erebor was back in its rightful ownership. Most of her memories of it had faded, so much of this would be new to her.
Thorin came up to her, as did her sons. She buried her faces into their chests and cried, but these were happy tears. Finally, they had the kingdom that they'd been denied, free of the dragon scum.
She rejoiced with the company, and feasted like she hadn't in years. The night made her dizzy, but she could barely notice over her excitement. Tonight was the best night of her life.
When she finally went to her quarters in the royal wing, Dwalin helped her. He hadn't drank as much as her. He didn't complain.
When they got to her door, Dis spoke. "So I'll see you tomorrow?" Her words were slightly slurred.
He nodded.
"We have a lot to discuss, you and I."
He smiled. "Yes, we do."
