Jem did many things for Will.
When he had more and more of his yin fen daily, even if he wasn't going out to fight, even if it would speed up his death, his mind kept saying this is for Will, all for Will.
And when Tessa was taken by Mortiman, and he was on his deathbed, he let Will go. He let his best friend, his parabatai, leave him to die so he could go after the girl he loved. All he thought was this is for Will, all for Will.
When the Silent Brothers came to take him away, to wait until he was so close to death, only to make him immortal. Immortal, meaning he'd have to watch Will go on without him. He kept telling himself, this is for Will, all for Will.
And when the Silent Brothers carved the rune onto his cheekbones, and all he felt was pain, he only thought this is for Will, all for Will.
When he went with the others to rescue Tessa, he knew Will would be broken. He didn't need want to see how he'd react when he realized Jem, his one and only parabatai, was not dead. But he kept saying, this is for Will, all for Will.
And when he went to say goodbye to Will, to leave him to grow old without him, he told himself this is for Will, all for Will.
When he snuck out of the Silent City to sit by Will's side, he knew he risked punishment from the other Brothers, but he kept thinking this is for Will, all for Will.
And when he blessed Will and Tessa's child, James, he hid his heartbreak because this is for Will, all for Will.
And finally, when Will was finally ready for death, he went in to say goodbye, even if it meant he'd have to suffer the terrible pain of goodbyes, he said to himself this is for Will, all for Will.
When he finally, finally, crossed the river from the living to the dead, he knew Will would be waiting on the banks, and he knew they would go into death together, because everything he'd done was for Will, and now he'd do the same for him.
