This is just a really short piece about Bester. It won't make much sense unless you know what was revealed about his history in the psy-corps book trilogy. ie:

Bester is really Stephen Dexter. His parents were leaders in the telepath resistance. They were killed by the Corps and he was kidnapped and given a fake identity.

When Bester sees his newborn daughter for the first time and p'hears her telepathic babble he knows he's supposed to feel proud. He should be happy the Corps breeding program is working so well. (That they'll want Alisha and himself to mate again registers absently in his mind.) All he can think of however is that they're going to take his daughter away, going to send her to Teeptown and Cadre Prime.
He and Alisha may not love each other - may not even really like each other - but he's sure they could both love this child. They're not going to get a chance though because the Corps is going to take her, cut her off from her family. 'Corps is mother. Corps is father.' She's going to be lied to and terrorized by the Grins, striped naked and have all her worst memories ripped from her mind and put on display.
Bester (Stee) knows what's waiting for her and there's not a thing he can do to stop it.
