Chapter One- Survival

Twenty three seconds. That was all the time Sylar had to escape certain death. Though Hiro's attack would have killed a normal person Sylar was anything but normal. None of the people around him were normal but only one could match his own strength; Peter Petrelli. Who was about to make a very large explosion. If Hiro wasn't going to kill Sylar the blast was going to. Sylar had come so close. So close to taking Peter's power before Hiro interrupted. Sylar had seen the future, but he hadn't seen this. He tried to change the future and doing so made it happen. For a moment regret filled him. If he hadn't killed Ted this never would have happened. But he was alive right? And currently, in the distraction of Petrelli brotherly love, he crawled towards his salvation; a storm drain.

Sylar glanced for only a moment as Nathan carried his brother high into the air in a blur. So that one could fly huh? If Nathen survived this Sylar made a note in his endless memory to take that power. Finally he made it to the storm drain but with his diminishing strength could he lift it? For a few moments the lid simply fluttered, not moving at all. But with character defined determination Sylar managed to use his stolen telekinetic to move the drain cover enough for him to move down. He lowered his body enough until gravity did the rest of the work.

Sylar fell and fell and fell. With his diminishing life it felt like forever in the darkness and stench of the storm drain. For a moment he wondered if he had infact died. But his eyes widened. No, he wouldn't die yet. Finally he hit the ground. Well the water flowing below the plaza anyway. He ignored the smell as he waded to the cement shore. He layed down on his back and took deep breaths of air. He looked down at the wound and saw just how bad it was. It was thin, but it was deep. The sword had pierced him entirely after all. And it was in a vital region full of blood vessels.

But when Sylar looked at the wound he saw past all that and saw what he could always see; the problem and solution. That was his first power. The power to understand complex systems and how they worked. It was why he was able to fix watches perfectly and knew where the super human powers came from. Not only that but how to take them and add them to his own power. He reached into his body, pinching nerves that instantly dulled the pain though he knew he would lose all feeling there now. He then put pressure on a part of his chest that effectively stopped the bleeding to a mere trickle.

Sylar looked up at the bleak ceiling of the tunnel for only a few minutes before his vision swirled for a moment and then all was darkness...
