She bent down and picked up a chunk of whatever was on the ground, confusion sparking in her eyes.
"What is it, Jacin?"
"Snow," he told her gently.
"Snow," she repeated, drawing out the word. "We don't have this on Luna. It's very cold."
Jacin sighed and reached out to the snowball from her hands, depositing it back on the ground. "That's why I told you to wear your gloves."
She shrugged and looked up at him, "We should have it on Luna."
"We'll talk to the climate scientists and see what we can do."
He handed her the gloves he'd grabbed for her and she tugged them on, "So… what do you do with snow?"
He swiveled his glance across the snowy landscape of Benoit Farms, where they were staying with Scarlet for their Royal Vacation. It didn't snow very often in those parts, so the weather had been quite the change of pace. "You, uh, you play in it."
"Play?" She regarded the open field, covered in a cozy blanket of all of this… snow. "Like, games?"
"No, uh, look." He bent down and picked up a chunk of snow, much like she had, and shaped it into a ball, and then tossed it at her. It smashed against her coat and she recoiled a few steps. "That was a snowball, and throwing it at someone means you're having a snowball fight." Jacin had never really been around the stuff, but he picked up some things while he was around Earthens, and in his travels as a Lunar Guard for Levana.
"I don't like fights," she said in a small voice, folding her hands in front of her.
"Want to make a snowman?"
She cocked her head to the side, "A what?"
He got on one knee and began to stuff some of the packed snow together, and he grabbed two sticks nearby and stuck them in the sides of the snowman, which had ended up no taller than a foot and a half.
"Well, that's sort of what they look like."
Winter leaned over and assessed it, "Hm. I like that! What else can you do?"
Jacin looked around for a moment, "We can make snow angels."
Winter's face lit up, "Snow angels? Are they real? Do they come to life? Can they fly?"
His shoulders slumped, "No, look."
Shoving all of his dignity to the back of his mind and reminding himself that no one else was probably around, save for some other guards and Scarlet and Wolf in the house, he lay down in the snow on his back. He began to move his arms and legs in a fanning motion and Winter watched him with the most curious expression on her face.
He jumped up and away from it so as not to ruin it with footprints, and then flourished an arm at it, "A snow angel."
Winter tilted her head, "It's very pretty. You will be a very pretty angel, Jacin."
"Thank you, Your Highness," he muttered, making excuses in his head that the red that had spread across his pale cheeks was a result of the cold.
The new Lunar queen looked up at the sky, flakes falling in her eyes, "Why does it snow?"
"Well, it's, um. It's like rain in the summer time, only it's winter, so it's too cold and the rain becomes a solid, sort of, thus making snow."
She regarded him again, "'Winter'? Is that what they call this weather? Did they name it after me?"
Jacin chuckled, his eyes reflecting in the brightness of the snowfall. "No, they call the season when it is cold 'winter', they have since long before Luna as a country itself even existed."
Winter nodded slowly, "So my mother named me after this season…." Realization bloomed in her eyes as she dropped to the ground, her movements creating an angel in the snow.
"Hey, Jacin?" She asked, her limbs motionless inside the shape of the wings she'd created.
He smiled down at her, "Yes?"
"I love winter!"
Author's Note: I wrote this for tlcshipweeks's "Wonderland" theme. Yeah, cool, ok.
