The new King

Authors Note: In the movie, Alexander quickly moves from being Philip's son to the new heir to quickly back into the present of killing his fathers friend. This will add a bit of shape to the relationship between Hephaistion and Alexander, as I see them.

Alexander watched the crowd erupt in fits of cheers and relief. Announced, so soon after his fathers unfortunate demise, he the new king of Babylon, He the new Macedonian King. How could this possibly be? He didn't want this; he didn't want to gain the throne with his father's untimely death.

He perused the crowd, and saw his mother. Her raven hair tangled around her shoulders, she smiled at him, but he did nothing but stare at her, her cold smoldering eyes stared back, as he wiped his fathers blood of his nose, his triumphant hand fell loosely to his side.

The friends of his fathers and other dignitaries left, taking his fathers body away, others still in mourning and being forcefully removed by their loved ones.

His mother had left with the crowd, from what Alexander could make out, he was all that remained. Hephaistion approached Alexander, whose weakening stance began to show in his legs. Alexander lowered himself to the ground, he could see Hephaistion out of the corner of his eye, but he felt like a dead weight, sinking lower and lower.

"Alexander?" Hephaistion asked him, concerned. "Alexander please come inside"

"No Hephaistion… I can't do that" Alexander shook his head, allowing himself to kneel on the ground,

"Alexander, you can't stay here. Be strong" Hephaistion urged, running his hands through Alexander's hair, as Alexander openly wept, putting his hands in his fathers' blood, he turned to Hephaistion, tears streaming down his face. Hephaistion sighed and knelt down beside him; his caring eyes sifting over Alexander's devastated face. He forced his own tears back, as he rubbed Alexander's shoulders, trying to sooth him.

"What use is a King who cries?" Alexander asked him, putting his hands on Hephaistions robes, dampening them with thick clogging blood.

"But Alexander, what is a King if he cannot mourn? Or a man for that matter?" Hephaistion asked him, and kissed Alexander's forehead,

"Will I be a good King Hephaistion?" Alexander asked him, as Hephaistion tried to get him to stand, Alexander wouldn't move. He rested his head in Hephaistions lap,

"Only time will tell, Alexander. I will not judge you yet"

"Oh sweet Hephaistion, May you be my only judge and jury" Alexander buried his face in Hephaistions robes, "May you only say my wrongs and praise my rights… may you be my eternal light" Alexander was pouring his heart and soul out to Hephaistion, Hephaistion listened intently, his soft hands resting on Alexander's shoulders.

"You'll stay with me tonight, Hephaistion? Don't leave my side, and turn in fear. For my mothers watchful eye shall indeed look down upon me tonight, like a hawk in the sky after its prey" he sat up a little and put his face into Hephaistion's shoulder, "cure me of my mourning, cure me of ill fate"

"Oh my beautiful Alexander" Hephaistion wept, "I shall stay long by your side through your turbulence, and fear not as I will remain steadfast as others who judge you will come to pass"

Alexander was crying, but they were tears of relief and joy as he looked into his Hephaistion's face, seeing his one love, his true companion and friend. He rejoiced in this feeling, by kissing Hephaistion's soft gentle lips, allowing his hands to run along Hephaistions' well defined jaw line.

"Love me Hephaistion, as I will love you" Alexander breathed, opening his eyes after their embrace.

"As my King wishes" Hephaistion smiled, Alexander returned it.
