I am playing a game
It isn't especially hard But it is somewhat boring
It is called the WAITING game
While I play it I think about you
And what I long to see when you get home
Your smile brightening up my day
Your eyes making me forget my anger at you
Your lips greeting my cheeks and tongue and forehead and eyelids
Your hair falling across both of our shoulders like a river of molten lava as we embrace
Your voice as you call the kids downstairs to see how they have grown in the past three years
Your tears as you learn that your father passed away two months ago
Your laughter as you make us a sit down family supper in the kitchen
Your hand gently guiding me to our room
Your frown as you see the clothing you left behind scattered across the floor
Your pity as I explain I imagine that they still have some lingering trace of your long since gone perfume
Your impossible answer when I ask you the next morning to stay this time
But you will never say that impossible yes…
The universe is too vast for you to let it go
So I'll just play our little WAITING game
While watching the stars
Just hoping that someday I'll win
