He knew

He should have killed her back at the Carnival. He knew that. She was pathetic, shallow and absolutely useless. He assumed that she would cause even more problems that Vicky had. But Elena and Stefan wouldn't let them. Their fault. He knew he should have killed her.

He still believed that he should have killed her when she declared that she'd help the wolf. A vampire helping a werwolf! Come on, how absurd is that? Another aspect clearly showing that she wouldn't survive being a vampire for long. She wouldn't even listen to him, her sire, as he ordered her to stay away from Lockwood as one bite would be her death. Stupid. But shortly after he found himself not even caring anymore. Let her die. Her fault. He just knew that she would be gone soon.

He knew that her time had come when he heard about her being sold out by Lockwood and tortured by Jules and the rest of them. He only went with Stefan as he wanted to kill something, anything, as the thoughts of Rose still lay heavy on his mind. He was slightly surprised that she'd been able to hold herself up while being caged in for hours. And after accidentally being in the neighborhood when she told off the wolf the same night he wondered how she still got herself together and not running a havoc. He was startled how she stood her ground and how she kept her emotions together while the wolf was still in front of her. She told him off quite well actually. Well, his fault. But still he was amazed that she was still living.

He didn't know when the tables turned. He saved her after being kidnapped by Klaus' minions only to prevent the ritual from taking place, Elena's death being the outcome of it. But then, why only her and not the wolf, too? He only rescued him so that Caroline would stop whining. And he'd even helped the Mutt due to her! But as the wolf decided to transform and focused Caroline as his target he jumped in between them. And now, here he was. Being bitten by a werwolf, knowing exactly to what it will lead as memories of Rose's death still lingered somewhere. He'd never believed that Caroline would be the cause of his death. He thought that he knew that he would be the one to outlive her. But back there, when Lockwood jumped at her, intending to bite her, he knew one thing for sure: He couldn't let her die.
