This one shot has been written as part of a challenge set by the lovely people over at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry (Challenges & Assignments).

Task: To write about memories being protected.

Hiding deceit

Peter shifted nervously from foot to foot as he awaited his meeting with Albus Dumbledore; this would be the first time he had been in his presence since he had joined the Dark Lord and Peter felt incredibly anxious. Albus Dumbledore was a skilled legilimens and one small slip, and every memory and thought of his betrayal would be shown to the only man his master feared. The plan that had been put into place would be revealed and over before it had even begun.

Just a few nights previously he had been informed of James and Lily's plan to make him their Secret Keeper, and Peter had excitedly gone his master and told him of this. Needless to say he had been very impressed with Peter and tasked him with keeping up his facade until the very last moment. He had also warned Peter that it was important that Dumbledore believed that the Potters had changed their mind on who their Secret Keeper would be.

He cleared his mind of every thought about the Dark Lord, and took deep breaths to calm his anxious mind.

CRACK!

The tall, lanky and ageing Albus Dumbledore appeared before him, nearly making Peter jump out of his skin.

"Peter," the older gentleman greeted him warmly, giving him a brief hug.

"Headmaster," Peter responded, still unable to call the man by his first name. "I have some news."

The older gentleman observed Peter over the top of his trademark half-moon spectacles and Peter had the feeling that he was prying into his mind. He worked effortlessly to keep his block up and protect his memories, only allowing Albus to see the convincing faux memory that he had created with his master.

"I see, go on Peter," he said, moving his right hand in a circular motion indicating that he should speak.

Peter took a deep breath and launched into his well rehearsed spiel; every angle had been covered and he knew that there was no room for suspicion.

"James and Lily have changed their minds. They will be choosing Sirius Black to be their Secret Keeper; they said they find him to be the much better person to protect their location and I have to say Headmaster, I quite agree," Peter explained quickly in a neutral tone. "Should He Who Must Not Be Named find out that I am the one protecting their location, I fear I would crack like an egg."

Albus Dumbledore nodded his head and Peter could see in his eyes that he quite agreed with this fake explanation and it made him feel all the more confident that he had made the right decision in joining the Dark Lord; at least he could see his value and appreciate what Peter could contribute to the cause.

After a few more exchanges of pleasantries, Albus Dumbledore departed on urgent Order business and Peter then quickly apparated to Godric's Hollow where James and Lily performed the Fidelius Charm with him.

Less than 48 hours later he had betrayed them and revealed their secret to his master, and the two people that he had once called friends had died, and their child the one who had supposed to die had survived and the Dark Lord was dead. The only silver lining was that no one knew that it was he who had betrayed them.
