I could hear Abby's controlled, light footsteps echoing down the Hall of History. The door opened and she came in, closing the door. Cammie and Macey must have returned to their dorms. My sister sat down heavily on the plush, cushiony seat that Cammie often occupied. Her cover was gone and now I could see that she was weary and tired. Grim too.
"What's going on, Abby?'' I questioned. My sister's eyes never wavered from mine, but instead she asked "Have you told her?'' The question was meant for Joe. Without looking, I knew he give a shake of his head. I waited patiently, my hands knotted together tightly under the table. Abby blew the bangs from her forehead and motioned for Joe to speak first.
"I met with Zach in a stone tunnel near the station," he began. "Cameron was following me. I walked up to Zach and we began conversing in Farsi." He took a deep breath and continued "He heard that Macey was never the target and that the Circle of Carvan was planning another attempt."
Abby started "Macey led me to Cammie when we were on board the train. She didn't seem to suspect anything. I got pissed off, naturally, when I saw her after hearing what Joe said. She kinda had a little breakdown afterwards."
Their words rang hollow in my mind. We had always known that there was a possibility that Macey was never the target. My instincts told me it wasn't her all the time. Still, I hoped against hope that Cammie just happened to be there when the kidnapping took place. That the Circle of Carvan didn't know that she would be with Macey and planned for the kidnapping to take place at that particular time. The truth left me unbalanced, out of breath, shaky, just like when I was five and heard that my mother was never coming back from her mission.
"What are we going to do about this?''I finally asked them. Abby simply replied "We are not going to let Cammie know of this matter. Ensure that she isn't sneaking out of school again." I stared at her and nodded my head. There was nothing else to be said. We spent the rest of the evening reviewing the security tapes and trying to single out members of the Circle of Carvan.
It was well into the night when I let Abby and Joe out. Joe looked at me in the eye and said "Don't worry Rachel. We won't let anything happen to her. You won't let anything happen to her."
God, I hoped so, I thought as I closed the door and leant against the wall. Damien was gone already. Cammie wouldn't be next. I won't let it happen. Tears fell from my eyes. I won't let it happen.
