Dear Miss Granger,

As you are aware, Hogwarts suffered a terrible loss in July when it's greatest Headmaster for a long time was killed. In the circumstances, the school would normally be closed but it was Albus Dumbledore's last request to keep the school open with I, Miss Minerva McGonagall as the head teacher. The train will depart, as usual, at 11am on September 1st on platform Nine and Three Quarters. I am very honoured to tell you that you have been chosen for the position of Head Girl.

Yours sincerely,

Miss Minerva McGonagall.

Headmistress.

Hermione sighed as she put down the letter. Normally she would be ecstatic that Hogwarts was still open, but as this year as it would be absent of some of her favourite people, Harry, Hagrid and Dumbledore, she was not to sure she wanted to go back. The thought of her being picked as Head Girl was now about as exciting as a piece of cheese.

She went to her desk and knocked up a quick letter to Ron:

Ron,

Just got my letter from Hogwarts – I'm Head Girl. DON'T TELL FRED OR GEORGE! Just wondering if you are going back? Please do, I feel I am honour bound to return because of my position but the thought of school just doesn't excite me anymore if there's no-one I care about there.

Write back, lots of love Hermione xxx

Many miles away, in the run-down barn that he called home, Ron was busy gnoming the garden when a large tawny owl landed on his shoulder and started pecking viciously at his ear.

"ouch! gerroff me you little bugger!" Ron growled, flapping it away. He looked at the letter and noticed Hermione's handwriting on it. His heart leaped. Quickly, he snatched the letter from the owl's sharp beak and began to read.

'… the thought of school just doesn't excite me anymore if there's no-one I care about there.' These few simple words she had written had his mind made up; he was going back to Hogwarts for definite.

'Hermione cares about me,' he thought 'she needs me there at Hogwarts with her. It will just be me and her. Maybe with Harry gone she will pay some attention to me and realise how madly, desperately in love I am with her.'

He scribbled back a defiant reply;

Of course I'll be there. What's Hogwarts without me, eh? See you on September 1st.

Love from Ron xxxx
