Three words -- so much can be expressed in three words -- so many different feelings. So many different consequences can come from hearing those three words.

People will walk away from the three words, they'll run and embrace it. People will cry, rejoice, become angry, smile in happiness all because of those three words.

Looking through the glass of the recovery room I see a broken man now -- a man who is no longer able to do the thing he loves -- the professing that in his mind has dignified him as a person.

And perhaps it has.

His words echo through my mind.

Sure, I've heard some of the strangest confessions come from people who were still groggy from surgery. And I've even heard those three words mumbled by many -- but never to me -- always with another's name attached.

And not by this man.

"Many people don't like me and I don't like many people. But I'm good at what I do. I save lives --"

I wipe way an absent tear -- thinking about what the future holds for this man -- he will never operate again. Never come to a point when someone's life depends on the precision of his scalpel and the skill of his hands.

Over the last year I have come to know this man beyond the hard exterior, beyond the nagging comments and his spit fire approach at dealing with people -- especially me.

I would even dare to go out on a limb and say over the course of the last year we have even become acquaintances -- sharing emotions that six years ago I would have been appalled to share with this man.

And that brings me back to the point -- three words -- declared by a man still recovering from a surgery that will forever change him.

Three words.

"I love you -- Elizabeth."
