Just wanted to say thanks for stopping by and enjoy! This is my first fanfic after being a longtime lurker. I'm hoping to make this a multiple chapter story, time permitting. Reviews are more than welcome. I apologize in advance if anything in this story resembles any living or fictional person or place.

Prologue
She first noticed it out of the corner of her eye. It flitted away, popping into existence and disappearing just as quickly. Had it actually been there or was it a trick of a weary mind? Korra tried to extinguish the exhaustion in her eyes with the heels of hands, only succeeding in further blurring her vision. She had just returned to Air Temple Island from Republic City, her head still swimming with the weight of the task laid before her. Of course, as the Avatar, she would be called upon to usher the rebuilding of the city. It had been selfish to hope that the people's disdain for her would survive after the fall of the Great Uniter. But alas, their capriciousness trampled any residual contempt they might have dared harbor. After all she is their Avatar. Their savior…their devil. They needed her help. Nay, they deserved it.
As the candles' flames flickered and rose again to break the crisp evening air, Korra slowly shuffled her feet along the meandering path to her dormitory, listening to the pieces of earth scuttle from beneath her. The night was unusually quiet. Or maybe, nothing was as loud as the droning of the thoughts swirling in her head.
Korra, after what felt like an eternity, wrenched open the doors of her room and tripped as she unceremoniously threw fur-lined boots into a dusty corner. Her punch-drunk legs staggered over to the bed where she fell face first into downy bliss. The beckoning of fatigue filled her mind with a warm fog usually reserved for lovers whispering sweet nothings into wanting ears. But just before the veil of sleep could whisk her away from Republic City and herself, she saw it again.
The tiniest trick of the light. It looked like the distortions she had seen dancing above sweltering asphalt roads that Asami had built in her absence. But this…was different. It felt different…as if it was coming from Korra's being - her pulse driving it to her palm where it lingered for a moment and died. The air became still and her breath froze in her chest as the vastness of time stretched ever before her. Her mind could not decide if she had ever existed. Or was it that she had already lived for an eternity? She could feel the sinews of her muscles being torn apart. And then, she felt the pull of gravity once again as her body pressed into the mattress and her battle with consciousness was finally lost.
