Light of My Life

Chapter 1
CCX: Yeah, yeah, I promised myself no more multis due to my tendency not to finish them, but this just doesn't work as a one-shot. So anyway, I thought that this little niche was a good place to mine a story out of; working with the less prominent characters, the Grado generals. I think that this is going to be a fun little story, and the idea that I'm still capable of writing a PG story is, well, unbelievable. Now to the disclaimer: All characters and locations are property of Nintendo. Oh, right, and did I mention that it's going to be mostly done in first-person? Yeah, thought I'd throw in an extra challenge…that, and it seemed to work best. Some spoilers will follow.
General Duessel, a traitor? This couldn't be!
Something was definitely wrong here. Starting this ridiculous war is bad enough, and destroying the Sacred Stones even worse, but then to accuse one of his generals of treason…This is not the emperor I once knew. And the Obsidian, Duessel? He was like a second father to me…to us… I remember when I first decided to become a Knight of Grado…
Flashback
"You're a knight?" I asked the young man before me. The emperor had sent knights to bring aid to our village, which had been ravaged by bandits.
"You got a problem with that?" he replied roughly.
"No, not at all…just a little surprised. You can't be much older than I am."
"I may be young now, but just you wait. One day I'll be as mighty as General Duessel!" The other knights laughed at him. "New kid sure likes to shoot off his mouth," one said. "Get back to work, rookie!" They walked off, leaving him with clean-up duty.
"Don't listen to them. You'll be a great general someday," I told him, "and I'll be able to say that I knew you way back when you were a raw rookie."
"Hey, just being a knight is a lot of work. I've been in the service for a number of years trying to attain that rank."
"Sorry, Sir…"
"Glen."
"Sir Glen. My name is Selena…"
End Flashback
Now I would be forced to fight against my mentor…what a fine squadron of knights has been assembled to assist me. "You agree that this is ridiculous, right?" I muttered.
"Damn right, it is," one replied, and I had to turn around to see if I had heard correctly. Ah, right…Sir Cormag was among those assigned to me. He looks and sounds so much like his older brother at times…though Glen is of course better-looking. …But I can't afford to be thinking about that now. I'm here in Bethroen, and Glen's flying off to Carcino to track down Renais's Princess Eirika. I've got to focus on the task at hand: Killing Sir Duessel before he can rendezvous with Prince Ephraim…
