broken happy endings

warnings for character death.

prompts below.

word count (without a/n): 423

hello! I haven't posted in about a month, and for that I apologise (and give you this tiny, four hundred word drabble). I have several longer jily one shots in the process (and a romione one!) which I'm planning to upload (or at least finish!) by the end of the month. so, look out for those!

without further ado...

The worst thing is that their story really could've had a happy ending.

Lily scrambles up the stairs, tears blurring her vision as she lurches.

They were twenty one, young and married with the whole world at their feet.

She hears the sickening crack as her husband hits the wall and suddenly his voice is no longer calling out to her.

Together and in love, brave and daring against the world.

Her son is in her arms, their son, with James' hair and her eyes, and she knows that she has to protect him, she has to -

They fought for a better life, one they could share together.

Hot tears stain her cheeks as she presses a kiss to her son's forehead; she can hear that monster coming up the stairs, hear his laughter because he knows she's an easy target and the awful thing is, she knows it too.

No one could've imagined it would end like this: cold and empty on the floor.

And she needs more time, she wants this moment to freeze, so she can get her son to safety, at least so that she can tell him that she loves him one more time.

They always said they'd go down together but they never meant like this.

As she places her son in his cradle - one last safe place - her eyes catch sight of her wedding photo, tucked slightly behind a pile of laundry she'd never gotten round to putting away.

They were just teenagers.

And she can remember that day, she remembers it as the happiest of her life, and she knows that she would do anything to go back to that moment and stay in it forever, and learn what it means to be safe again.

But her blood was tainted and his had sinned and so they fought, in defiance a world that would always be against what they were together.

The monster is here now and Lily has no more time for goodbyes or reminiscing because she is not in the past: a newly blushing bride, pregnant and in love, she is here: a widow and a mother, who will do anything to protect her son.

And their love would always be stronger than the hatred others tried to throw at them.

And so, she dies, tumbling backwards as the green light hits her square in the chest.

They died together.

Her last thoughts are of Harry.

And time stood still for a second.

The first thing she sees is James.

ah, yes, an ambiguous ending. I've never done that before ;). I'll leave the interpretation up to you.

written for assignment 4, muggle history, task 3: write about wanting to freeze a moment and stay in it forever.
