Farewell

Hi, this is my first attempt at a poem. I do hope you like it, and please review!

The dawn arrives, gold paints the sky,

And the sea breeze heralds the Elven-home, where Blessed Lands lie.

But I cannot forget the ones I have left behind on the Eastern shores,

Least of all you, whom I will see nevermore.

You were of many names,

Elessar, Strider, Sauron's Bane.

But to me you were but one,

Estel, Hope to all free lands under the sun.

Elvellon, were we not the truest of friends?

That year in autumn, with the fiery leaves falling,

I met you, a little boy with stormy eyes and regal bearing.

I was old when you were born,

But, ai, you bore a weight beyond your years, morn after morn.

Did we not partake in the grandest of schemes?

Journeying over the Misty Mountains, where cold winds cry,

Sparring with Glorfindel, beneath a velvet sky.

Leaping down out of balconies, you and I,

Such adventures with the Twins have we ever known.

Were we not the best of comrades?

For as the shadow encroached, bringing with it dread,

We fought together, bow and sword, to defend our lands.

I would have followed you, despite your Mannish idiocy, to the very end of ends,

A foolish Man indeed, to have the courage to lead the Dead.

Do you not know how much I grieve?

For a carefree boy, bright eyed and laughing, studying amidst dusty shelves.

For a love struck Man, gazing upon the fairest of Elves.

For a weather-beaten Ranger, loyal, brave and stupid if ever I saw.

For a King of all kings, humble in pride, gentle in wisdom, and loved by all.

For even the strongest of all mortals must suffer the Fate of Men.

But one day, Greenleaf shall meet Hope once more,

And beyond the circles of this world, our spirits shall soar,

Oh, Estel, I daresay that it will not be the end,

Forever one, Elven-kind and Elven-friend.
