None of the glee clubbers had realized, that when school got out, it meant no more free lunches for Stevie and Stacey. They didn't realize that Sam wasn't really eating when he would come over to hang out. It hadn't clicked in their heads, that them being homeless, meant that they were probably hungry.

Rachel didn't think, she just asked him to audition for the community theater, and so he did. The practices being at night, and him watching the kids during the day, cut into the time he could drive the truck to deliver pizzas. She didn't realize that he was paying the rent on the motel with his part time job, and that they'd be running out of unemployment soon.

Finn didn't understand why Sam was starting to get sluggish during football team games of Zombie. It wasn't like Sam, not being able to keep up, even Strando was doing fine. He didn't remember what Sam had said about his body when they had been doing Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Mercedes saw the rings under her boyfriend's eyes. She didn't know how everything was pulling him apart. How he took shifts with his parents sleeping, so that way someone was always up with the kiddos when they weren't job hunting. She didn't know that when they had coffee dates, and he demanded to pay for her coffee, that he was using the money he had for his lunch.

Beiste knew something was up, but Sam wouldn't let her help out. She had kept him after practice a few times, and talked with him, but the boy kept quiet, and just wanted to go home. Whenever the team went to Breadstix, he politely declined.

The real trouble started when he got sacked in a scrimmage, and he didn't get up. Strando's hit had been clean, and he hadn't hit him that hard. The medic came on the field, and he ordered for an ambulance.

"No." Came Sam's weak voice. "I'm fine. I'm okay." He tried to sit up but the medic held his helmet to the ground.

"It's not the hit that I'm worried about son. It's you starving."

"I can't. The hospital. No insurance."

"You need to. If you just go eat now, you'll do more harm than good."

Sam was supposed to be fine, he was supposed to go afterwards, but he didn't. Everyone thought he was getting better, he was smiling more.

But he wasn't better, and right before school started, he slipped on the stairs during a football excercise, and he fell down the entire flight. By the time the EMT's had shown up he was gone.

Glee took care of the funeral arrangements. They weren't sure what they should sing. Most of Sam's songs would have a bit of a dissonance.

They looked towards one song, and they finally agreed upon it. Slowing the tune of Sam's last song with them.

"If you wake up and don't want to smile…"
