Chapter 01

Blond bangs were swept out of green eyes as the boy rummaged through a box of knick knacks in the attic of his grandfather's storage building, looking for something to sell.

"Hikaru, are you sure it's okay for us to be doing this?" the girl asked as she peered over his shoulder into the box.

"Old people have tons of junk in their attic, he won't miss anything," Hikaru replied flippantly. Green eyes lit up as he spied a promising object under all the junk in the box. Moving things out of the way, he lifted the heavy block of wood clear of the box and set it on the floor.

"I know what that is. You use it to play Shogi," the girl stated confidently looking at the board Hikaru had uncovered.

"No. Stupid Akari; this is a Goban, you use it to play Go," Hikaru admonished as he looked around.

"Oh," Akari mumbled, watching as Hikaru picked up a rag and began scrubbing the board. "What are you doing?" she finally asked, brow creased in confusion as Hikaru scrubbed furiously at the surface.

"I'm trying to get these stains off," he answered, continuing to scrub at what appeared to her to be a perfectly clean corner of the Goban.

"What stains? Where? I don't see anything," Akari questioned, leaning in to get a closer look.

"These stains right here," Hikaru pointed at the corner of the board he'd been scrubbing.

You can see it.

"They kinda look like blood splatters or something," Hikaru mused.

You can really see it.

"Yes! That's what I've been saying!" Hikaru replied with a bit of heat in his voice. When Akari just looked at him as if he'd lost his mind, it dawned on Hikaru that she wasn't the one who had spoken.

Finally! It's been so long since someone saw it.

"Akari, there's someone else up here," Hikaru spoke quietly, standing up and glancing quickly around the dark room. "Come out, whoever you are!" Hikaru yelled into the suddenly too dark and silent attic.

"Stop it, Hikaru, you're scaring me," Akari whined as she backed towards the stairs.

"Grandpa, is that you? The joke's over. Come out!" Hikaru yelled again, oblivious to Akari's rapid retreat from the attic.

Once again, I shall return to the land of the living.

The soft voice came from directly behind him and Hikaru whirled and then gaped at the figure standing, or rather, floating before him.

He would be considered beautiful, by some standards, with piercing gray eyes set in a pale face and long flowing black hair and dressed in what appeared to be old Japanese court dress, complete with the weird hat, he held a fan over the lower half of his face.

Suddenly, the face darkened and he loomed in front of Hikaru, filling his vision, and yelling in a voice filled with pure malice.

And you shall take my place in the hell of eternity!

Before Hikaru could process what was happening, the figure rushed him, seeming to flow over and through him at the same time. Hikaru felt his self ripped free from himself and tossed around in a maelstrom of emotion with no way to stop it.

In that brief moment of connection, Shindo Hikaru knew Fujiwarano Sai and Fujiwarano Sai knew Shindo Hikaru.

And then, Hikaru was driven out of his body by the sheer force of Sai's desirelongingneed and fell down, down into the Goban and darkness and knew no more.
