Play the Diamonds
Val is nominated for homecoming queen, and the king is most unexpected news for her. But another girl will do anything to get the crown—and claim Tyler. Which is worth more—diamonds or the hearts? And when it comes to it, which will be sacrificed?
*Note: This is not
a ripoff of the homecoming ep, which I haven't even seen.*
PLAY
THE DIAMONDS
"You've heard, haven't
you?"
Surprised by the voice,
Tyler Connell closed his locker door and looked into the blue eyes of a blond
cheerleader.
"Haven't you?" Val
Lanier repeated. Tyler sighed and opened his locker again to pull out his
Spanish book.
"Haven't I what?"
Hank Beecham surfaced
behind Tyler and informed him: "Heard who was nominated for homecoming queen."
Tyler groaned again,
raking a hand through his sandy blond hair, tousled from lack of brushing that
morning.
"Let me guess," he said,
starting towards room 208 for his class, "Amber Blackwell. And Ella Newton.
And… Cara Fontaine. And… Angelica Smith."
"Besides them," said Val
cheerily.
"I don't know." Tyler's
voice sound weary for nine o' clock in the morning. "Who?"
"Me."
That woke up Tyler, much

almost inevitable, that Val was elected, cheerleader and star student, EMT and
cheerfully noticeable in the school. But did she know who was elected for king?
"Yes, me." Her voice
held a small, nearly undetectable hint of annoyance at Tyler for finding it so
hard to believe.
"That's great, Val!"
Tyler tried to make up for his mistake, but a little too late. Hank raised his
eyebrow meaningfully. Tyler caught the gaze and cringed under the dark stare.
Finding Tyler unable to make any further comment, Hank volunteered information.
"And did you hear who was nominated for homecoming king?" asked Hank. Tyler glared; he had wanted to tell Val himself, later, when he was awake.
"No. Susie just told me
about the queens."
"Well, it's all fine and
interesting…"
"…But I'm sure Val
doesn't want to know," Tyler interrupted sharply. Val turned from rapt
attention to look at him questioningly. "I mean, it should be a surprise."
"No, I'd like to hear,"
cut in Val. "Someone care to fill me in already, because I'm going to be late."
"Actually," said Tyler.
"It was…" Hank
intervened, swearing he would kill Tyler if someone didn't tell Val already.
Thoughts of him being beaten up by someone paid off by the cheerleader squad
were filling his head at a rapid pace.
"Well…"
"Tyler. Tyler was
nominated for homecoming king." Hank's statement was blunt, but met with an
instant reaction from Val…
