The autumn sun was gradually falling below the horizon, staining the sky with a pink hue. Thalia gazed out of the wind, watching the last market sellers calling out their wares. "They should be back by now," she murmured to herself, "I wonder what's taking them so long."
Turning away from the window she made her way downstairs to where Grover was attempting to wash their dirty clothes in water brought up from the Tiber. "This is hopeless," he complained, looking up as she entered, "the waters more dirty than the clothes!"
"I know," she sighed, "but, with the emperor refusing to even attempt to clean the river, we have no choice." "Anyway," she continued, reverting to the topic on her mind, "have you seen Percy or Nico? I sent them out at dawn; they don't usually take this long."
"Sorry, no, they probably just got held up," he replied going back to his washing.
At that moment, a panting Nico stumbled through the door, "They got Percy!" he managed to say between breaths, "I couldn't do anything to stop them!"
Suddenly alert, Thalia went over to him, "What did he have with him?" she asked sharply.
"Two Rabbits and a pheasant," he looked at her wide eyed, "They're taking him to the Forum."
"Shit!" Thalia ran out the door, a feeling of dread coming over her. She sprinted down the cobbled streets of Rome, pushing people aside when they got in her way. Finally arriving at the forum she found a large crowd had gathered. She hesitated a moment on the outskirts of the throng, fearing what she would find at the centre. Then, her face set and determined, began to push her way to the front. What she found there made her blood boil.
Percy was kneeling with his wrists bound to a wooden post above his head. His back was bloody and covered in lash marks, his shirt torn to pieces. Towering over him was a soldier, his hand gripping a bloodied leather whip. As she watched he raised it over his head. Without thinking, Thalia screamed for him to stop, then dived in front of Percy, using her body to shield him from the blow.
