Hi, this is my first WSS fanfic and I hope you all enjoy! The most of it is very depressing, but it is ok in the end! Please don't expect this to be incredible, its just a drabble that I wrote down. I have used little bits, here and there, of 'The Call' and I hope you all like the song. I have literally just got home from a production of WSS and I have fallen in love with it, so if you are a Tony/Maria fan please read! And review, I looooovvvvveeee reviews!
Disclaimer: I do not own West Side Story or 'The Call' by Regina Specktor. If I did, Tony would still be alive and I wouldn't have to write this scene!
"Maria."
Anita put a hand on her shoulder, but she shrugged it off and stood up. She carefully held back tears, as she walked to the head of the church and stopped, in front of the pale and harmless looking, body in front of her. She took a deep breath and laid a hand on his cold chest, trying to detect any sign of a heartbeat.
'It started out as a feeling, which then turned into a hope. Which then turned into a quiet though, which then turned into a quiet word. And then that word grew, louder and louder, till it was a battle cry.'
She knelt down and fell over his limp body, weeping softly and whispering his name over and over. Her black curls were longer now, and they provided a shield from her face as she took a deep breath and slowly lifted up her head, to see his intensely beautiful features. She longed to hold him and run her hands through the thick, brown hair she loved.
"Maria?"
She didn't care whose voice it was, she was lost in her thoughts.
'I'll come back, when you call me. No need to say good-by. No need to say good-bye.'
Someone wrapped a shawl around her cold shoulders and she stood up, wiping away her tears and heading out the door. Her blue silk gown trailed after her as she ran out. She was suddenly in a graveyard and mist was closing in on her, as the clouds gather overhead. She walked down a stone path, darting out of the way of tombstones in front of her. She kept focus on her feet and did not take her eyes off the path in front of her, when suddenly she tripped and fell over a plaque. She stood up quickly and looked down. The plaque read: 'Here lies Bernardo, loved son and treasured brother. May he find peace in death.'
'Pick a star on the dark horizon, and follow the light…I'll come back, when its over. No need to say good-bye.'
"Maria!"
She picked herself up and tried to forget all about the plaque, as she ran faster and faster through the trees and the mist. Then, she collapsed and fell in a crumpled heap on the ground. The silk gown began to melt away, into the mist and it consumed her body, leaving only her thoughts and memories. All that pain in the memories she had suppressed, surfaced.
"MARIA!"
She began to shake as a voice grabbed her, like a hand and pulled her upwards, further and further...until she was no longer in the graveyard. Her eyes flew open and she sat up in her bed, bewildered and confused. Tony sat next to her and was looking at her, anxiously. "Maria! Thank god you're awake! I didn't know….I thought…." He breathed as she put a finger to his lips and kissed him, tenderly. "It was just a dream." She said, trying to console both herself and Tony at once. "I love you, never forget that." She whispered, softly and began to weep. He hugged her tightly and she pressed against his chest, gaining more comfort as the minutes passed and her tears stopped. Eventually the light consumed the blackness and washed away all traces of fear or worry. He just held her there, for the rest of the night as they both slept, peacefully, in each others arms. Not knowing the fate that awaited them.
