Before I came to this unfamiliar place, I knew my life was as ordinary and uneventful as it could get. My old life back in San Francisco was as ordinary as it could get. Friends, family, guinea pigs as pets, et cetera. But, for some reason, I just didn't want that life. And now, here I am. In a land full of darkness.
I had first found my way here in an old house, near the woods, which were a couple miles away from my house. My friend and I had seen it a couple days ago, so we wanted to check it out. But, when we got there, it was empty. And creepy. It was more like a mansion than a house, and it was as "television worthy" as you could get. The tattered curtains that barely showed through the old windows were ripped and dangling. There were even a couple of large holes in the ancient roof. Surely no one lived there, or even owned it, for that matter, so we decided to enter.
After barely pushing the olden front door a crack, we tried to climb through the open window. We succeeded in that part of the mission, but then we had to remember what we were even doing in here. It smelled musty and damp. My friend started walking around, looking at certain strange items, while something else caught my eye.
A small red box stuck out in one corner of the, I'm assuming, living room. Except it wasn't just any old box, it was literally glowing red! I cautiously stepped closer. The box didn't jump or move away, which was probable, considering what it was already doing.
I gently laid my hand on the top of the box. It didn't feel hot or cold, just normal. I then courageously probed the side of the box with my hand to search for a slit that could indicate a way of opening it. Instead of an opening, though, I found what felt like a button. I hesitated. Did I even want to find out what would happen? The red glow still looked a little intimidating.
I took a deep breath and closed my eyes. My finger shakily pressed the button.
I forced myself into a sitting position, so I could at least get my bearings. As I did, I realized that my body felt a little…different. It must be the way I was sitting, I thought. I blinked a couple times, trying to get used to the darkness. Then I saw a light in one corner. I froze. I had no idea where I was, and light wasn't exactly my favorite sight right then, so I knew I had to do something. I couldn't hide, I wasn't sure if there were even any hiding spots in the area. So I decided to just sit there and hope the light would just pass. Boy, would I regret that decision later.
"Becky? Did I just hear you in there?"
Becky? Who's Becky? As far as I knew, my name was Crystal. And there wasn't anyone else in here, I hoped. The footsteps started to get louder. The person must be getting closer.
Great. I shivered in the damp air. I guessed that I must be in a basement or something. I was wondering how much more suspense I could take, when suddenly, the advancing footsteps stopped. I dared not to move. I knew the person, or thing, was waiting.
"Hmm. I wonder what all of that ruckus was. Oh, well. I must be hearing things." It sounded like a man's voice to me. He must have given up, because, the next thing I knew, I was alone. Again.
