IMPORTANT AUTHORS NOTE:

Hello everyone! So I have been reading the Divergent books, and have fallen in love with them, as I'm sure many of you can relate.

This story isn't just mine, I've been accompanied by Silverfox289s, who will be writing this fic with me. Our plan is that I will be the writer of Four/Tobias' perspective, and Silverfox289s will be writing the perspective of our OC. However, we have nothing stabilized yet on that note, so I'll just be sure to say who wrote the chpt at the beginning of each one. Silverfox289s: You'll get a hold of her by searching up 'Silverfox289s' in the 'authors', that will be easiest. But feedback will be welcomed by BOTH of us! So whatever's easiest for you :)

THIS CHPT/PROLOGUE: Okay, so the prologue is written in the perspective of our "bad guys", just so you guys will understand to some extent what the threat is about. The rest of the chpts will be either Four/Tobias' perspective, or our OC's.

So please enjoy and let me know what you think!

Thanx,

-HeartOfGold7 (I wrote this prologue)

Shoes scuffed on the pavement and flashlights flickered then grew brighter as two figures approached. I nodded to them and shone my light toward them briefly to be sure it was who it was supposed to be. It was.

"Where are the others?" I ask, glancing behind them to an empty street.

"Damien's bringing the others," one answers. "Or at least he was supposed to."

I study the man who spoke. His name is Gage Malone, and he's been as good of a friend as friends get here. He's also a year older than me, but age doesn't matter. I have people working under me that are up to thirty seven, and as low as nineteen. The other man beside him is Rico Claw. Not his original name, but no one cares. Being Factionless gives us that freedom.

"So what's the plan, then?" Rico asks, following Gage's lead and flicking off his flashlight. I'm the only one who needs to hold a flashlight here, so that the others know where I am.

I glance at him and say in a cool tone, "You'll find out when Damien gets here."

Moments later, I hear the sound of heavy boots in the street, followed by lighter steps. Damien always wears heavy boots, so I know it's him. He's Factionless, but he was Dauntless. Gage and Damien are my closest allies, we trust each other for the most part, so I have the others listen to them too. But I'm the leader, I know that. And so do they.

When Damien and his followers approach, I do a quick head count, and notice that there's an unfamiliar man standing among them. There's supposed to be four, but there's five. I look at Damien. "Who's that?" I say, but he just shrugs, glancing behind him at the stranger.

Sighing, I approach the man, drawing up to let him know I'm the leader. "Who are you?" I say coolly, crossing my arms over my chest. The others stare at us, waiting to see what I'll do.

The stranger shuffles one foot nervously, then looks me straight in the eyes. I raise my eyebrows, but smirk. He has guts, I'll give him that. "I wanted to join you," he says. "I heard you wanted to get rid of the Factions, and I want in."

I raise my chin, studying him. "Is that so?" He nods, glancing around him. I rub my chin with my hand. "What's your name, kid."

He scowls slightly at that, but answers, "Simon Al."

I nod and turn. "Fine. You're in. But..." I add, turning and smirking. "Under two conditions. First: you have guess my name. And guess right."

"Your name?" He scowls further and studies me. "Well... If you're the leader, than you must be Black?"

"That's what you'll call me by," I say, "But you need to know my first name."

Damien rolls his eyes and mutters, "Who around here doesn't know Dolton Black?"

I grab his shirt and draw back my fist. "Whoa! Hey, dude, chill!" Damien says, blocking his face. I laugh and let him go. Everyone else is smiling and chuckling at my joke. I turn back to the new guy, Simon.

"Second," I continue, "You have to prove yourself. But for now, you're in, kid."

"Could you stop calling me 'kid'?" he grumbles, "I'm twenty one you know."

"And I'm your leader, so don't even think about defying me. Got that?" I growl, turning away and making my way to the front of the group.

"He just looks scary, he's really not." Josh, our youngest member tells Simon in a low voice.

I ignore them and turn toward the group again, flicking off my flashlight.

"How old is he, anyway?" I hear Simon ask.

"Twenty four."

"Alright!" I say, "Follow me!"

Silently, I lead them down the street, keeping a fast pace. When we are close to Erudite headquarters, I veer down a different street, my eyes darting back and forth to make sure we aren't being followed. We reach a small hut hidden between others. There are few here, because most Factionless live closer to Abnegation, but this is where I live. I open the door. It's unlocked because I have nothing to hide. I could care less if someone decided to take a look. Holding the door, I watch them file past me. They each nod in turn as they do so, and I close the door behind me when we're all inside. Picking up a match, I light the oil lamp and turn to face them. There are a few real lights, but not high quality ones. They haven't been updated in years. But I don't want to turn them on. The less light, the less suspicious we seem by any passers this late at night.

"So," I say, pressing my hands together. "We're all here. Damien, do you have the Serum?"

He nods and removes a vial from his pocket, then hands it to me. I study it and smile. "Good."

"Serum?" Gage asks. "What for?"

I look at him. "I told you. We're going to get rid of the Factions."

A woman with blonde hair and dark eyes crosses her arms. "That all makes sense, Black. But isn't Evelyn already doing something like that?"

"Evelyn," I hiss, staring her down, "Is doing just that, Kelly. But she's waiting. And by the looks of it, it could take another two of three years before she does anything." I look at the others as I continue. "But Evelyn isn't one of us. She is Factionless now, yes, but she left Abnegation. Which first, is cowardice." I look at each of them in turn, letting facts sink in. They need to know that I am the right leader. That with Evelyn, they'll never get true revenge. "Secondly," I continue, "she fist lived her life with a husband and a son as far as I know. She isn't one of us. She doesn't understand what we've gone through." At that, some of them nod and growl under their breaths. "This serum," I say, holding up the vial," is from Erudite headquarters. "We're going to use it to get rid of the Factions once and for all." I was Erudite for the first part of my life, before I turned sixteen, so I only need a small sample of the serum, which Damien provided me with, and I can make more.

Everyone looks at each other with determination. I did it. I won them over. They are mine, and I will use them to destroy the Factions. Starting with Dauntless, because they are the most powerful.

They break out into conversation, murmuring in hushed voices amongst themselves. I listen in on a few, weighing the vial in my palm.

"It will be good to take what belongs to us," one says.

"They should have thought before they threw us out," another growls.

"I can't wait until this is over and we are on top."

"Don't the Erudite have a death serum?"

"Ah, who cares? I'm sure that's what Black's got."

I don't have the death serum, actually, but I let them continue. They need to build confidence. Besides, I have something better than death serum.

One conversation catches my attention, and I turn toward the two. It's Kelly and Josh. "I heard that the Dauntless are getting stronger," he is saying.

"Huh," Kelly snorts. "Isn't that the point of their Faction? They're Dauntless."

"Yes, but I heard that there's even a kid with four fears."

Kelly raises her eyebrows and purses her lips. She isn't buying it, but I approach them. "What's this about four fears?" I ask Josh, ignoring Kelly's eye roll.

"Oh, umm," he jumps a little, as if he hadn't noticed I was there. "There's this initiate in Dauntless that has only four fears, apparently."

I push the vial into my back pocket. "Dauntless born, or transfer?"

"Transfer."

This is not good. I know that Dauntless is the most powerful... But an initiate with four fears? It sounds suspicious, and I can't have any threats too big. Someone with four fears could be dangerous. And I can't take that chance. I need to get rid of the kid. Or maybe I can use them? "What's the name?"

Josh shrugs. "I donno. Calls himself Four, but I doubt that's his real name."

"What Faction did he transfer from?" I can't help myself. I've always been drawn toward power, and this 'Four' might be useful to me.

"I don't know," Josh says. "I don't keep track of that stuff."

"Well start!" I snap, turning on my heel and stalking toward the door. "Alright, everyone can get home." As they all start to file past me, I say, "And if anyone hears anything about this 'Four' from Dauntless, I want to know about it."

Simon brings up the rear, and just when he's about to exit, I stop him by grasping his elbow. "You'll get your chance to prove yourself. I suggest you decide whether you can handle it. But if not," I pause and look into his sunken brown eyes, "you better not breath a word of any plans to Evelyn, or I'll see to it you don't get many breaths after that."

He pulls his arm free and nods before exiting. I don't think about him anymore. I know I've made myself clear. Now it's up to him to decide. Work for me, or die.

Removing the vial from my pocket, I set it down on the windowsill and study it. This serum will avenge me. I was Erudite. I transferred to Dauntless at my choosing ceremony. But when I broke both my wrists in a fight, they let me go. I don't even know why. But now I'm Factionless, and my wrists are stronger than before. Just as the rest of me. Dauntless will regret what they did. I have a nephew who transferred to Dauntless this year. His name is Eric, and I'm proud of him. Mostly because he reminds me of myself. Strong, brave, and intelligent. And not willing to give up or back down. The desire to win no matter what is like a darkness inside us. I lust for that darkness. It makes me indestructible!

Scrunching up my nose in disgust with the Factions, I turn toward my small couch and sit down with my head in my hands. I will find this 'Four', destroy the Factions, and rule this city. And I will do it no matter the consequences. No matter the lives, and no matter the danger. I am Dauntless. A true Dauntless, and I'm going to get my revenge the only way I know how. I have to take it.
