He came into the world still and silent. Not a sound escaped from his little blue lips. The room was quiet except for the wails of a mourning mother. The mother took her newborn son from the neighbor woman and held him close. She peered into his tiny face and pleaded for him to breathe. In her head she knew he never would, but her heart screamed out for hope. Her precious little boy gone before he even got a chance to live. The only reminder of the man she fell in love with.
Whether it be minutes or hours she did not know, but she looked down at her little boy one last time before she forced herself to move. She wrapped him up in a blanket covering even his face. She set him down gently and took only moments to clean herself up and change before picking him up again. Leaving her home she stepped out into the night cradling the baby against her. She walked slowly towards the forest softly humming a lullaby.
Her little boy had been born on the night of a full moon in the midst of spring. Everything was blooming making the night seem so much more alive. She walked through the forest to a small clearing by a stream outside of her village. Carefully she set him down before starting to dig. Her hands were moving away the dirt until she saw a light. Looking up she leaned back in awe, for the light was blue and hovering above the ground.
Before she could think about how it was possible with no one around more lights appeared coming from the ground and the air around her. It could have only lasted moments, but there were hundreds of small blue and white lights in the clearing. They were all around her bobbing up and down with the breeze. Mesmerized she looked down as one of them touched the blanket covering her son.
Something about the lights compelled her to unwrap the still infant until he was lying on the soft grass. She looked at the light hovering only slightly above the baby.
"Save him" she spoke in a whisper.
The blue light moved as if looking straight into her soul before gently floating into the baby's chest. As if it was their leader all the other lights moved as one and disappeared inside her son's still body. She stared at him in suspense hoping beyond hope she had witnessed a miracle. She felt a tear make its way down her face before gasping in shock as her baby's body moved. A piercing wail broke the silence of the night.
She reached her wailing son with tears of joy streaming down her face. Swaddling him up in the blanket she held him as if she would never let go. She rocked him back and forth ceasing his crying and looked down at her little miracle.
Overhead a new dawn bloomed and one brave bird approached the new mother and the baby she held in her arms. Hunith looked down at the little bird on the ground before smiling and walking towards the rising sun.
"Hello Merlin." The little boy's eyes opened wide a startling blue before flashing a brilliant gold.
