"That was when I saw a girl at the top of the steps." Dan shook his head, his eyes far away. "Have you ever wanted anyone or anything badly that you knew you couldn't have?" Dan looked at Serena earnestly.
"Dan," She shook her head and spread her hands. "I would have gone out with you, I never cared about where you came from." He looked at her with disbelief.
"This isn't. About. You." He said emphatically. Serena closed her eyes. She looked like she might cry.
"Blair?" She said with a small voice.
"Blair Waldorf." He seemed to be oblivious to her distress. "Nate thought I was some guy named 'Matt', but Blair would have looked right through me as if I wasn't even there."
"Congratulations, I guess." Serena said sarcastically; bitterly; "You managed to keep her for what? Two weeks. Quite the payback for years of obsession." She made as if to storm out.
"You think this is over?" Dan asked her with a smile.
"She's marrying Chuck."
"Ahh… marriage." Dan said with a smirk. "I hear that's supposed to last forever…" He raised his eyebrows.
"And you've blown your secret." Serena put her hand on a hip.
"Believe me, I have oh so many more." Dan assured her. "And I also have money. I have power..."
"But Chuck has Blair." She left.
"… For now." Dan said to himself.
Five years later.
"Did you see Blair…" Dan asked Serena, adjusting his tie. "…that dress." He shook his head.
"She has a child Dan."
"And he might even be Chuck's." Serena frowned and folded her arms under her breasts. "What? Chuck has been cheating on her for years. Blair is neither stupid, nor forgiving. In my opinion, he's lucky she left him… functional." He laughed.
"You're saying he's yours?" Serena asked, not even wanting to know, but unable to let it go at that.
"It's possible." He looked into the distance as he sometimes did. "Brown hair and brown eyes. Blair's lucky she has a type." He looked at Serena guilelessly, although she knew that was meaningless. "Did you ever notice that? Louis as well?"
"Have you ever heard of erotomania?" Serena asked.
"I researched it once for a novel." Dan smiled, conceding that Serena had scored a point. "Are you ready for this?" He asked.
"Our marriage?" Serena asked. Dan nodded. "No." She answered succinctly.
"Then maybe you shouldn't have gambled quite so much" He kissed her cheek. "See you out there!"
That night.
Blair moaned in his ear. Dan smiled. Dosing Serena with sleeping pills was probably out of line. He made a mental note to buy her something nice.
