The Bold and Indisputable
I'm sitting opposite Sam in the booth of a diner like I've done a thousand times before. But this time's different; it's something I'd never thought would happen.
"Happy birthday," says Sam, sliding a gift across the table.
"You didn't have to," I say, but I'm glad he did when ripping apart the paper reveals a hunting knife I'd had my eye on for a while.
"I can't believe you're forty," he laughs, the little bitch. Years in Hell notwithstanding, I can't believe it either. Or that he's not complaining about the cholesterol-busting cheeseburger we both know I'm gonna order.
Sam was always the one who knew exactly what he wanted; "to boldly go" and all that, the great nerd, but these days... I kinda feel the same. They say that life begins at forty, and while there might be a few more aches and pains, I've never felt so alive. Okay, so I'm squinting at the menu and maybe my night vision's not what it used to be, but y'know, I think "they're" right for once.
If I could only get Sammy to speak up and stop with his recent habit of mumbling, my freakin' life would be perfect.
