A/N: Okay so this is a story I've had an idea about for a while. (I promise I'm not forgetting about my other fic, I'm gonna update it soon!) This is a Winnara story, but that's really not like the basis of the plot. I have everything bullet pointed and figured out. I'm not sure how many chapters it is going to be at the moment, but my best guess is probably like 15. Maybe more. Anyway, this is just an intro chapter so others will be a smidge longer. Thanks for reading and let me know what you think!
Kara groaned as her alarm clock went off, signaling the start of a new day. The numbers shown in red told her that it was far too early to be awake, or at least she thought it was. But every morning was the same, waking up at 6:00, eating breakfast with Alex before work, and then it was off to the office. And today was no different, pushing herself out of the bed she quickly untangled herself out of the blankets before walking towards her closet.
Her bedroom wasn't anything super extravagant, it held her bed, a desk, a few photos, and a window facing the city. Her desk was littered with pens and papers of articles that she started but never got the chance to finish. Every time she thought that she was onto something, a real news story, it turned out to just be something dull, boring, nothing that the public should worry themselves with. Instead she would just throw her article on her desk of unfinished news and turn her attention back to what she had been assigned to write.
National City was a paradise, the world that so many people had wanted but very few were able to achieve. Everyone lived a stress free life, there was no complications involving love, emotions, finding someone you didn't like. It was all taken out of the equation, all you had to do was follow the guidelines. You were promised a good, full life. Everyone had a place, everyone had a job. In order to help everyone fulfill their potential things were decided beforehand. What school you would attend, what job you would have, who you would live with. Everyone contributed to society, no one was special, there was no class. It was simple, the way life should be.
Kara lived with Alex, and the two were good friends. Friendship was always encouraged, but nothing more. Which was fine with Kara, she had Alex to talk to. As well as Winn and James who lived next door. She was happy, and so were they. It was perfect, it was the life that had been mapped out for her. All she had to do was live it.
Walking into the kitchen, Kara grabbed her favorite box of cereal from the cupboard alongside a bowl. Setting both on the counter she turned towards the fridge and reached for the milk. After she had her breakfast in front of her she leaned against the counter as she began reading through her text messages, quickly sending Winn a reminder of their game night they had planned. The sound of Alex's footsteps caused her to look up, a smile on her face as she saw her best friend, rather sister, enter the room. "Good morning."
"Did you eat the last of the cereal?" Alex asked pointing towards the bowl on the counter. "No, no of course not. There's still enough for you to have some." Kara replied as she set her phone down and ate another spoonful before continuing. "Where do you have to report to today?"
Alex was placed in Security, in charge of protecting them all. It was considered a high honor, that it meant she was brave and willing to sacrifice herself for their safety. Often times she was looked at, considering that throughout the city they only had 20 officers. But in a city of 1000 it made sense, everyone here was good, there was no crime, it was a simple life. But still Alex went out and roamed the streets, putting out fires when they happened, handing out tickets to those who violated traffic laws, minor infractions that didn't seem like they mattered. But they did, and everyone knew that.
"Downtown." Kara nodded at the answer, smiling as she finished her breakfast before sliding off of her stool. "We can go together then, I can drop you off on my way to the office." Walking back into her bedroom, Kara began picking out what she was going to wear. Deciding on a simple yellow dress with a brown belt, she grabbed a pair of black flats and began getting ready for the day.
At 7:00 she was standing by the door, waiting for Alex to come from her room. "Come on Alex, we're going to be late." She called checking the time once more. "I'm coming." Echoed down the hall as her sister came into view. Dressed in her full black uniform, Alex was pocketing her cell phone as she reached Kara. "Let's go."
Together the sisters made it to the car and Kara climbed into the drivers seat. The radio played some pop music as she put the car in drive and pulled out of her parking space. "One of these days you are gong to be ready on time." Kara started, turning on her signal to indicate that she wanted to turn right.
"Relax Kara, we have plenty of time to make it to work." Alex replied with a soft shake of her head as she leaned forward to turn up the music. "You can relax, it's going to be fine. If you're late one day no one is going to kill you." Kara was always punctual, always on time, and it was good habit to have. But Alex knew that sometimes it could stress Kara out, that she wanted to make everything perfect.
The drive was quick, Kara dropping Alex off with the promise of being there to pick her up after they were both off, and making it to National City Picture News with five minutes to spare. Taking a breath, she got out of the car and locked the doors behind her. Today was going to be a good day.
