Summary: Miroku comforts Sango from her nightmares

It was happening all over again. Her father, falling...a deep gash in his back. Her comrades, all of them falling to the ground, their blood washing over the dirt like crimson rain. Sango turned to face the murderer, but her shock deepened as she realized the killer was her younger brother, Kohaku.

"Kohaku, no!!" Sango awoke, panting. It was that dream again. Well, not exactly a dream, for it had really happened, but the pain was just as fresh every time it played over in her dreams. There was an ounce of comfort knowing that Kohaku had only killed his fellow demon slayers because he was under the spell of a tainted jewel shard, a shard that was controlled by Naraku.

Sango shook, both with rage and uncontrollable sobs. How long would Kohaku be under Naraku's influence? Sango had tried to save him, once by almost taking his life as well as her own. The only reason she hadn't gone through with it was because Inuyasha had stopped her. The half demon had also told her that Kohaku did have a small bit of free will, for he hadn't carried out Naraku's order to kill Kagome. This should have brought peace to Sango, but part of her worried that even if he did have some free will, who was to say that Naraku would keep Kohaku alive if he kept disobeying him? Kohaku was all she had left, but he wasn't free, so in a way it was like he was already dead.

"Sango-chan? What troubles you?" It was Miroku, who she guessed had awoken due to either her sobs or her yelling out, but she couldn't answer him. She was sobbing so hard that the only thing the monk could do was hold her close. It was odd being held by him. He was a pervert most of the time, flirting with every female the Inu-tachi had come across, but he had professed his love to her awhile ago, and for the most part remained faithful. He still did the occasional flirting, but a good smack from her or her hiraikotsu put him in line.

"Oh Houshi-sama, sometimes I can hardly stand it. I want Kohaku back so much, but I know we can't remove the jewel shard from his back or he'll die. If it stays inside him though, Naraku will be able to control him forever." Miroku had rarely seen Sango like this. Most of the time, she was strong. She had faced many demons in her position as a demon slayer, but she had never faltered. He held her close and rubbed her back.

"I can only tell you that we must continue fighting Naraku. My heart breaks to see you so upset by this, but you have to remain strong. We will get Kohaku back, and we will find a way to have him back to his old self." He paused for a moment, then added, "I don't know what you're going through. It's horrible knowing that you have someone left in your family but you can do nothing for them. I know this though; you will always have me. I know I'm not the most...faithful man in my actions, but heart belongs to you Sango. Always remember that."

It was rare that Miroku said something so tender and loving to her. Sango looked up, and although she couldn't really see Miroku, she felt his arms around her and felt a soft kiss that was placed on her forehead. She snuggled close to him and despite her feelings at the moment, she smiled.

"I know that, Houshi-sama. When it matters, you have always been there for me, as have InuYasha and the others. I know I'm not alone in this world, but sometimes my sadness for Kohaku makes it seem that way. Thank you for helping me see that clearer."

Miroku smiled and shifted slightly to allow Sango a bit more comfort. "I say we get some sleep. We've got quite a bit of traveling to do." Sango nodded, already begining to drift off to sleep. She felt Miroku relax more, but not before giving her bottom a small rub.

"Houshi-sama!"
