Raph, Mikey, and Donnie were on patrol, they lept from building to building in silence. It was oddly quiet, but it made sense since this wasn't a typical patrol for them, and it never would be again.
'I guess it makes sense.' Raph thought with a frown. 'Its our first night back on patrol since...'
His thoughts were put to a halt as all of the turtles went into a defensive stance. Even though they couldn't see anything they could sense it, they could sense the danger lurking in the shadows.
"I haven't seen you boys in a while." Karai said as she casually walked out from behind a billboard. "Why so tense?"
"What do you want!?" Raph shouted angrily, keeping his guard up.
"Nothing, just bored." Karai responded as she began to play with one of her knives. "Where's your fearless leader?"
Something in Raph's face changed for a minute when she mentioned Leo. Karai couldn't quite figure out what it was. Sadness, regret maybe?
"Why do you need to know!?" Raph yelled, anger returning to his face.
"Just wondering. We haven't sparred in a while and I kind of miss it." Karai said with her signature smirk.
"Yeah, well get used to it because it's never going to happen again!" Raph yelled, even more angry than before.
"And why is that?" Karai asked.
All of the turtles fell silent. Now they all shared that look on their faces that Raph had earlier.
"Because." Mikey said quietly. "He's gone."
"What!?" Karai said, her once cool expression fading.
Raph remained oddly silent as Mikey continued to explain. "The tecnodrone, Leo, he sacrificed himself to save everyone." Mikey began to tear up. He turned around when he felt Raph put a reassuring hand on his shoulder. Mikey smiled up at Raph and hugged him as tears began to stream from his eyes.
While all of this was happening Karai stood by, trying to process what she had just been told.
Leo.. was dead.
It felt like her heart was beating so fast it would explode. She felt something running down her cheek, she reached up and touched the wet liquid and realized she was crying. She hadn't cried in at least 8 years. Until now she hadn't realized how much she cared for Leo, and now he was gone. The only person who had ever believed in her completely, the only person who trusted her completely, even though she didn't deserve it, was gone.
She pulled her face into an emotionless mask like she had so many times previously in her life, before disappearing back into the shadows, Donnie having been the only one to notice the makeup running down her face.
...
When she got back to her room Karai locked the door before retrieving a small box from under her mattress.
She sat on her bed and took the lid off of the box, she reached inside and pulled out a blue mask, Leo's mask. It had come off one time when they were sparring and after he had left she picked it up to keep.
Karai smiled at the memory as she retrieved something else from the box. It was a surveillance photo of Leo taken by one of the foot soldiers a few months back. He was crouching on the top of a building with his weapons drawn. She wasn't sure why she had decided to keep this photo but she was glad that she did.
She would never forget the time they had spent together, no matter how brief it may have been. And she would never forget him.
She may never get to see him again, but she would remember him forever.
