Summary: She recalled memories of her past life when her grandfather told her to choose a starter pokemon from his trophy garden. AU Sakura-Centric
Title: Perseverance
When she was told to choose a starter pokemon via grandfather was the moment memories of her past life resurfaced within her. She used to be Sakura Haruno, loyal ninja to Konoha until she died of old age. In the same time frame, she got to know that this place was a world filled with monsters known as Pokemon and that she currently lives in the Sinnoh Region.
She is currently, Sakura Backlot, the 15-year-old granddaughter of Mr. Backlot and the heiress to the Backlot Family.
She had no parents in this life. The family head, Julian Backlot, her father, and her mother, Estelle Backlot, both died in a plane crash when she was only 8 years old due to an enraged pokemon. Feeling devastated, her grandfather regarded her as his precious treasure and only heir to the Backlot family. The one who's currently managing the Backlot family is her grandfather; James Backlot. Grandmother had already passed away years ago.
Despite being a compulsive liar to guests, grandfather is really reliable at times, he dotes on her, taking special care of her needs and studies. As a person, he's a very nice, awesome, grandfather, but as the head of the family, he is a god at doing business. They're the richest family in Sinnoh thanks to him. The Backlot family is well-known for exporting and importing goods to different regions and were also known for the Amity Square in Hearthome City where trainers can enjoy a peaceful time with their pokemon.
However, after Sakura's parents passing, grandfather kept her close at all times. She was never allowed to go outside much and could only occasionally play with the pokemon in his trophy garden. Children normally start their journeys at 10 years old but her grandfather never allowed it. He said she was too young to go traveling alone and he waited until she was of age to finally go on her first adventure.
Sakura stood in the trophy garden, watching the many different types of pokemon play. She can easily recall the names of the pokemon since for the past few years Pokemon Studies was part of her curriculum here at the mansion. It seems that she still had my photographic memory in this life too.
She walked over to the small pond to the left of her and looked at her reflection. She was slightly shocked at the familiar appearance. She looked exactly the same as she did in her past life except she still has much more baby fat her face at 15 now than she did in her past life.
She's wearing a white hat with a blue ribbon and various flowers decorated on it. Her wavy pink hair is tied into a high ponytail with long bangs framing her baby face. To her surprise, the diamond mark from her past life found it's way back onto her forehead here as well except that it's simply a birthmark in this life. She's wearing a thin strapped pink dress, decorated with red ribbons and pink low heeled shoes on her feet. It was truly great to be young and beautiful again.
She smiled at her reflection.
"Sakura, is something wrong?" Monica, my grandfather's caretaker asks.
Sakura turned to Monica with a smile. "I'm alright. I'm just thinking that none of these pokemon aren't really friendly with me." she lied.
Monica looked at her with pity. "No matter, we should hurry. Professor Rowan is waiting for us."
Sakura nodded.
She had forgotten about the professor that came to help her out before she heads out on her journey. She was so caught up in analyzing both new and old memories of her two lives that she forgot about him. She should start looking for a pokemon then. She walked further into the trophy garden, hoping to at least feel a connection towards any of the pokemon. She could see an Eevee playing with a Pichu and two Jigglypuffs rolling around.
She smiled at the display before moving on.
She reached a small hill where a lone tree stood and slowly climbed the hill. She remembered that she used to go on this hill a lot before her father and mother died but stopped coming when they passed away. She could feel emotions bubbling up inside her as I reached the top. She leaned against the tree, silent tears rolling down her cheeks. Her tears weren't only for her parents but her past life as well and all that came with it.
She sat at the base of the tree for a few minutes, with her head tucked in her arms and crying softly.
Suddenly, she felt a light touch on my feet.
She sniffed before rubbing her nose and looking at the culprit.
Sakura gasped. There smiling up at her was a Cleffa.
[Cleffa!] It cutely said.
She immediately felt a connection with the small pokemon and allowed a smile to grace her face. "You really cheered me up just by being in your presence," Sakura said, picking up the pokemon.
[Clef Cleffa!] It happily chirped.
"Cleffa, I'm going on a pokemon journey today and I don't have a pokemon to accompany me yet. Would you like to join me as my partner?" Sakura politely asked, secretly hoping the Pokemon agrees.
[Cleffa!] Cleffa nodded happily, waving its arms.
Sakura smiled and stood up with the pokemon in my arms. "Thank you Cleffa. We shouldn't keep Monica waiting any longer then," she told the pokemon her my arms before walking down the hill.
Monica sees hee coming and smiled. "I see you've chosen a Cleffa."
Sakura nodded. "Yes," she looked down at Cleffa who looked back with a smile, "I feel a connection with her."
Monica smiled before taking out a black Pokeball with red and gold stripes. "Here, you'll need this Luxury Ball to keep her in."
Sakura took the ball from Monica and lightly pressed it on Cleffa's head. The ball immediately opened and sucked the cute pokemon inside. She watched as the Pokeball shook a few times before it stopped, signifying a successful capture.
"Great, let's hurry back to Mr. Backlot and the Professor," Monica said, leading back towards the living room.
Upon entering the living room she could see her grandfather talking with the professor. They noticed her enter and my grandfather rose from his seat to greet her. "Sakura, my diamond cherub, have you chosen your pokemon?"
"Yes, grandfather," she replied, smiling brightly at him. Grandfather gave her that nickname because of the diamond birthmark on her forehead and because she reminded him of the pokemon; Cherubi.
"Really?" he asked with a grin, "quickly show your grandfather the pokemon you have."
Sakura held out the Pokeball. "Cleffa, grandfather wants to meet you," she said as the Pokeball opened and released the pink pokemon onto the ground. Cleffa immediately turned around and jumped into her arms.
[Cleffa!]
"Oh, you chose a Cleffa and it looks like you both already have a good bond already!"
"Indeed, that Cleffa is very healthy and well looked after," the professor said, looking at Cleffa in her arms before looking directly at her, "I'm Professor Rowan, it's nice to finally meet you, Sakura."
"The pleasure is mine, Professor," she replied.
"I'm here at the request of your grandfather. You were supposed to go on your journey 5 years ago but that wasn't possible at the time so I kept a Pokédex in my storage just for you," he said, handing her the Pokédex, "we also had a starter pokemon for but your grandfather insisted that you choose one from his trophy garden. However, if we ever meet in the future I will give you your starter pokemon in person."
Sakura smiled. "Thank you, Professor," she said before she looked down at the flat pink device in her hand.
Her memories easily supplied me with information on the Pokédex. The Pokédex acts as a portable reference tool, able to give information about a certain species of Pokémon even if a trainer has not seen or caught it. It can also give detailed descriptions of various trainer tools. The Pokédex also acts as a form of identification, allowing trainers to partake in the various Pokémon League competitions and it comes with a scanner that allows trainers to see what moves a Pokémon has. This was the ultimate tool for trainers.
"Try it out on your Cleffa." Professor Rowan said.
"Go on dear," Grandfather told me with a smile.
She looked down at Cleffa in my arms and flipped the Pokédex open, aiming at her.
[Cleffa: It is often seen when shooting stars fill the night skies. It's said to arrive riding on a shooting star. Known Moves: Encore, Sweet Kiss, Copycat, Magical Leaf.]
[Cleffaa!] Cleffa happily cheered at the voice coming out of the Pokédex.
"The Pokédex has many other functions and you'll get to experience them on your journey," Professor Rowan told her before pulling out a case, "In my hand, I have a badge case that your grandfather asked to get for you. You're already registered to compete in the Pokemon League. "
"I still can't believe my diamond cherub wants to challenge the league. I thought she'd want to be a coordinator." Grandfather cried out.
Sakura laughed. Though being a coordinator was respectable, she wanted to challenge the Pokemon League and become the champion. She also wanted to become a Pokemon Doctor too but that could come after she won the league or even sooner.
"Thank you, Professor," she said, bowing her head before taking the badge case from him.
"It was a pleasure helping you out Sakura, "Professor Rowan said with a smile before turning to grandfather, "James, I hope I see more of you now that Sakura is going on her journey. You can't use her as an excuse anymore."
The professor and Sakura laughed as her grandfather became indignant and started stuttering. After saying their goodbyes to the professor she turned to her grandfather. "Grandfather, is everything ready?" she asks, ready to go on her journey.
"Your grandfather had everything ready since yesterday my diamond cherub!" he said before gesturing for Monica to come over.
Monica came over with a one-strapped blue poke bag with many pockets. "Everything is already packed away Mr. Backlot. We have 10 Luxury Balls, 10 Full Restores, 10 Revives, 3 different outfits for Sakura, various female products, books on pokemon healing and pokemon battling," Monica said, handing over the bag to her grandfather before pulling out a purse, a cellular phone and a taser, "we have the emergency cellular phone prepared, Sakura's black credit card and a high-voltage taser in case of an attack."
"Great work as usual Monica!" grandfather said, taking the purse from her.
"Thank you for your hard work Monica," Sakura said before taking the items from her grandfather.
"Cleffa, I demand that you take care of my granddaughter," Grandfather told Cleffa who was nodding seriously in my arms, "she's the only direct family I have left. I wish I could keep her here forever but I don't want her to hate her old grandfather. So I'm entrusting her to you." Grandfather finished with tears in his eyes.
Sakura felt her chest tightened before she hugged her grandfather with one hand. "Don't worry grandfather. I'll grow stronger alongside Cleffa and when I visit again I'll have more pokemon to show you!" she said with tears rolling down my cheeks.
"You filial girl!" grandfather shouted, crying harder.
Sakura pulled away from her grandfather, smiling brightly and pulling Cleffa closer to her chest.
Grandfather grinned. "Always remember our family motto on your journey."
"Never give up. Keep your thoughts and your mind always on the goal," she says proudly.
"Good, good," grandfather says with a smile, "now allow your grandfather one last boon," he tells her before turning to Monica," Monica, prepare the helicopter!"
She looked at her grandfather in shock. "What are you doing grandfather?"
"The first gym is Oreburgh City which is quite far so the least your grandfather can do for you is take you to Eterna Forest which is closer and where you can catch pokemon!" Grandfather happily told Sakura.
She smiled, grateful for his concern. "Thank you, grandfather," she said before looking down at Cleffa, "Cleffa, you're going to fly in a helicopter for the first time."
[Cleffa!] Cleffa cheered excitedly.
Her cheer quickly infected her and she couldn't stop from feeling the excitement build up inside. She was given a second chance at life and she was going to live it to the fullest.
"Mr. Backlot, the helicopter is ready!" Monica said, running into the room.
"Let's go my diamond cherub!"
Sakura followed her grandfather into the helicopter that resided in the trophy garden. It didn't take long for them to reach Eterna City. Cleffa was jumping up and down in Sakura's lap as they prepared to land. They landed just outside the entrance to Eterna Forest in Eterna City. She quickly got out of the helicopter before turning around.
"Be safe my diamond cherub!" Grandfather yelled from the helicopter, "call as often as you can!"
"I'll be safe and call you as many times as I can!" Sakura shouted as they began to take off. She waved her hand side to side and looked down at Cleffa who was mimicking her actions.
[Cleffa!] Cleffa waved goodbye at the helicopter.
She watched the helicopter disappear in the distance before turning towards the forest.
She smiled before looking down at Cleffa. "Are you ready Cleffa?" she asks the pink pokemon.
[Cleffa!]
Sakura nodded before looking back at the forest. She recalls memories of her knowledge on the forest and knew that it was easy to get lost in the forest and it was very mysterious.
She sighed, steeling her resolve.
"Never give up. Keep your thoughts and your mind always on the goal," she whispers before making her way into the forest.
Authors Note: The first chapter is done! I already have 12 more chapters drafted and ready to type out. I can't wait to go further into Sakura's journey. Her final team has already been decided and I think it really suits her. Please review and tell me how you like it.
