THIS IS A MODERN AU.
Levi sighed as he dropped into a kitchen chair, closing his eyes as he leaned back in it. He stayed there for a moment before sitting back up and starting to take off his gear, unpinning his police badge and unholstering his gun, setting them on the table then standing again.
He took off the rest of the detachable pieces of his uniform and moved them to the high cabinet they were kept in. He would clean them when he wasn't falling asleep in his place. He slumped back to the master bedroom and was surprised when he got there. He turned on his heel and went further down the hallway. He slowly pushed open the door and gave a rare smile at the sight inside.
His wife had apparently been exhausted as well since she was fast asleep with her glasses on and one of the Harry Potter books open on her stomach with their child curled into her side on the small twin bed. He stood in the doorway, watching them sleep. Hanji murmured a bit in her slumber though he couldn't have repeated the scientific jargon. He silently closed the door again and went back to their bedroom to finish getting ready to finally sleep.
It was a couple hours later, when the night had technically turned into early morning when the bedroom door opened quietly and Hanji stumbled in through the darkness until she half-collapsed on her side of the bed. She jumped a bit at noticing her husband's eyes wide open and on her.
"Hey. When did you get home?" she asked sleepily. She was not as tired as she had been, but she was groggy from waking up. Their adorable four-year-old had kept her running around the entire day when she would've been tired anyway from lack of sleep the night before from insomnia, all of this topped with the general tiredness that came from pregnancy.
"Sometime past midnight, I think. Drug bust in the middle of town that needed backup just as I was walking out the door," he replied, moving closer to her and laying an arm across her side since she was facing him. She huffed slightly.
"They should really take more care to have more Officers on duty when it starts getting later. I was worried about you, you know." She pouted slightly at this. Levi made a scoffing sound at this.
"Hanji, you know I'm more than capable of taking care of myself and our co-workers."
"Yeah, I know. It's just... I can't help worry there will be something that happens one day that takes you from us. I don't want our little girls to grow up without their father. Not to mention, I-" Hanji cut off as her words were stifled by a quick kiss from Levi, who continued to pull her closer to him.
"Hey, it's alright. I'm not going to leave you guys. Not ever. I promised, remember? I promised I would never end up like any of them. Not my dad, not my uncle, not my mom. I promised. Do I break my promises?" He raised both eyebrows as he asked this.
"But what if-" He cut her off with yet another quick kiss, after which she sighed, conceding. "No. You don't break promises."
"Exactly," he replied before pulling her even closer to him. "Now, can we just have this one peaceful moment together before we have to wake up in a few hours?"
Hanji smiled lightly at this then settled in more comfortably with her husband, letting the calm of the night and safety of his arms wash over her and sweep her into sleep again. He watched as she drifted off then allowed himself to finally do so as well since he had yet to fall asleep just to be able to have that peace he only had with her.
The couple fell into dreamland, neither aware of what the future would hold but able to find solace in each other's arms.
