It was a beautiful day. The sun was shining and everyone was sitting under the cool trees on grounds fanning themselves with textbooks and chatting about the holidays and homework. Except for Hermione Granger. She was sitting in the library scanning every book on muggle birds and animals that were on the shelfs. Taking notes rapidly and ignoring Harry and Ron's vain attempts to drag her outside from the baking castle of Hogwarts.

Earlier that morning Hermione had found 5 duck eggs. They were sitting on the bank of the lake clearly abandoned by the mother. Hermione was surprised, not shocked but surprised that five little duck eggs were lying on the bank of the lake. In the end Hermione decided on top of all her homework and studying for O.W.Ls she would look after ducks. Ron and Harry were trying to talk her out of it but gave up after the 13th " But they could die without food and water and they can't look after themselves and…"

She wrapped the eggs in blankets and left them close to the fire to keep them warm. Ron and Harry tried to ignore the ducks but Hermione was too worried. "I mean what if they're not warm enough. Or someone knocks the blanket off…"

"Look Hermione, as I said everyone knows to be careful around it especially after you shouted at that third year for getting to close."

Explained Ron, getting more frustrated at his potions homework.

Harry was going to comfort Hermione but before he could start she stood up and moved across the room to the blanket. She kneeled down and put her hand on top. By this point everyone in the common room was staring at with an expression of curiosity on their faces and then Hermione jumped up. Harry looking terrified asked " Hermione are you ok?"

"They're hatching!"
