All in a Golden Afternoon: Gardening.
Dorothy and Scarecrow.
For Annmarie: The best Jitterbug of them all.
I do not own the Wizard of Oz or anything related to it.
The story takes place if Dorothy decided to stay in Oz and lived with the Scarecrow.
Dorothy was out working in the garden she had been planting. It was mostly fruits and flowers. Fruits like strawberries, blueberries, and cherries. Flowers like roses and sunflowers. She knew this was a strange combination of things, but Scarecrow assured her that anything will grow in Oz. As she was digging holes for the flowers she heard Scarecrow behind her.
She turned to face him. "Oh, Hello Scarecrow. How are you?"
"I am mighty fine Dorothy. Whatchya doin?" Scarecrow asked as he knelt down beside her.
"I'm planting some flowers. Would you like to help me?"
"I've never planted anything before. What if I mess up?" Scarecrow said looking concerned.
"Oh, it isn't very hard. Here, start by digging a hole. About an inch or so deep."
Scarecrow nodded and picked up the trowel. He dug a hole that was an inch and a half deep.
"Perfect! Now here." Dorothy said handing Scarecrow a rose seed. "Just put this seed in the hole and fill the hole with the soil that you dug the hole from."
"This is actually kind of fun." Scarecrow said as he did what Dorothy had told him too.
"You are doing a really good job." Dorothy said handing him the watering can, "Now take this and water the spot where you planted the rose."
Scarecrow took the watering can and did what Dorothy told him to.
"When will it grow and be beautiful?" Scarecrow asked as Dorothy started digging another hole for another plant.
"Well gardening takes time Scarecrow, It takes a lot of time and patience and care and love for something to grow so beautiful."
"Well you must have grown up with lots of that since you grew up so beautiful." Scarecrow said looking down at the rows of flowers that were already planted.
"Oh Scarecrow that was so sweet of you to say." Dorothy said while blushing. "Thank you very much."
Scarecrow nodded, "You're welcome Dorothy"
Dorothy leaned over and kissed Scarecrow on the cheek.
"Would you like to help me plant the rest of these flowers?" Dorothy asked.
Scarecrow looked up at her and smiled. "I would love to Dorothy."
So Dorothy and Scarecrow spent the rest of the afternoon talking and gardening. And that is how they spent many afternoons for a long time.
