Pigs.
Pigs are the emblem, tool, and loyal servant of the greatest evil to ever live. No respectable man uses the pig in their banner, except in displays of brutality upon the creature, as a symbol of good triumphing over evil. Farmers only rarely use pigs, in spite of their many uses, among them food and trash disposal. Pigs have all manner of horrors attributed to them, ranging from minor things like memory loss, nightmares, and night terrors, to catastrophes such as plagues and wars. Some groups are of the belief that it was some sort of dark pig god that drove away the goddesses, even claiming the King of Evil, Ganon, is this god come down to ruin all life in its greed.
Boars bred and trained for battle exist only amongst creatures whom are well-known for their devotion to ultimate evil, while the atrocious Moblins, pig-like man creatures, are infamous for annihilating entire villages simply for pleasure. Pigs are notable for their mudhole homes and endless hunger, meaning they are both unclean and hurt food supplies badly at times. Their flesh is considered to be outright poisonous by much of the general public, and evidence exists that their breath can kill.
Truly, pigs are an abomination, evil given physical form and tainted desire. Why else would the King of Evil, infamous for his shapechanging abilities, prefer this form, if not because its evil is equaled only by his own?
I personally disagree with these varied logics. Though the evidence is fragmented and unclear, writings throughout the ages, when taken as a whole, paint a different picture.
The pig is, I believe, Din's sacred creature, a beast of great Power. Ganon is noted for having the piece of power… perhaps it, not he, chose the pig form? There is evidence that the first time the King of Evil transformed into this form, his mind was not entirely there… it is quite possible he simply channeled Din's power blindly into his form as he was dying, and the power shaped his form into that most akin to Power.
Moblins are most noted for great strength… great power… and little else. Tricks that would not succeed on Hylian children work flawlessly on Moblins, for they lack the wisdom to discern the truth. And when faced with an overwhelming task, Moblins flee more often than not, lacking the courage to try.
Battle boar know nothing but the thrill of combat, for they have known no other joy in their lives, as intended by their handlers. Their strength is incredible, as is their endurance, but bravery and wits are lacking in such beasts of burden and battle.
Perhaps it is merely a flight of fancy, but it is my solid belief that the pig is the most sacred of Din's favored, and has earned its modern-day image of evil entirely through the efforts of Ganon and his hordes. Why, if things had happened only a mite differently, the King of Evil holding Courage instead, perhaps the popular Cucco would reviled while the pig would be the farm standard, loved by noblemen and peasant alike…
… or perhaps not.
Of course if one goddess holds a creature as sacred, than should not the others have their own favored animals?
Well, I have theories, but little evidence. My best guess so far is the owl for Nayru's Wisdom, and either the Cucco or the wolf for Farore's Courage… but somehow, I don't see those going over so well with the world.
Mind you, claiming Evil's emblem is actually a goddess's favored will, if I'm lucky, lead merely to a hanging, but… perhaps future generations will see my writings and grow wiser. Better to die with an inkling of the truth than live blindly, I say.
Mayhap I will live, though… one can hope, right?
