Melina yawned as she gazed at the television set. She rolled her eyes as the women on The View began to argue. She was waiting for Dave to come pick her up from the hotel to take her to the WWE Magazine Studio. They both had photo shoots scheduled, and decided to save gas and money by carpooling together. But Dave probably would have taken her anyways, even if he didn't have a shoot. The two had been involved in a brief physical relationship with one another about a year or two before, and since then they had become remarkably close friends. They'd do just about anything for each other. Melina pursed her lips as a breaking news report interrupted the talk show.
"Good afternoon, I'm Karen Jordan with a live developing story. There has been a devastating accident on the I-45 just off of Claremont. Witnesses are stating that an 18-wheeler lost control and swerved into opposing lanes, colliding with three other cars before rolling into the embankment. Sources are telling us that the driver of the big rig is going to be okay. He suffered five broken ribs and a mild concussion. Emergency officials have yet to report on the status of those in the other cars involved. Now we'll take to our eye-in-the-sky live at the scene."
Melina let out a compassionate moan as she saw the wreck come on screen. She reached for the remote control so she could change the channel, but was interrupted when her cell phone vibrated at her side. She picked it up and looked at the caller ID. She sighed, seeing Dave's name.
"It's about time! I've been wait-"
"Excuse me, ma'am?"
"…Who is this?"
"This is Lieutenant Jim Bayley of the Greenwich Police Department. Do you know a David Bautista?"
"Well, yeah, you're on his cell phone. Where is he? Is he in some kind of trouble?"
"No, ma'am…He was, uh…He was involved in an accident…"
If someone said three years from now
You'd be long gone
I'd stand up and punch them out
Cuz their all wrong
"W-What kind of accident?"
"There was a jumble with an 18-wheeler on the I-45. Three cars, including Mr. Bautista's, were struck when the big rig lost control."
Melina didn't need a second for the horror to hit her. As soon as the officer had said "18-wheeler", her eyes shot up to the TV screen.
"Ma'am…I called you because you were the last outgoing contact from his cell phone. We thought perhaps that he was on his way to meet you."
"…Was…?"
I know better
"It was a brutal accident. I don't think there's any more we could have done."
Melina stared at the TV through tear filled eyes. She let out a small choking sob when she spotted Dave's car on the screen, a mangled mess.
Still you said forever
And ever
"We tried the best we could to resuscitate him, but…I'm afraid we pronounced him dead about five minutes ago."
Melina dropped the phone, allowing the sobs to come louder. Her emotions came in hysterics as she crawled up close to the screen. She let out a hoarse scream as she watched the medics wheel away a large figure in a bodybag. Her Dave.
"No!...No…You're not…NO! No, no, no…"
She began to hyperventilate slightly as she stood to her feet. She stumbled weakly out onto the hotel balcony, the cool breeze whipping around her body. She gripped the rail, looking straight ahead with her eyes flowing. She took in a few chokes of air. As much as she had tried to convince both Dave and herself that she had moved on from their relationship, it had never actually happened. She still loved him deeply, and felt that somehow he had still loved her. Now he was gone.
"I'm sorry."
Melina let out a tormented cry as she leaned over the rail, plummeting 12 stories headfirst to the unforgiving cement.
Who knew
