L sat down, thinking. That seemed to be what he did most of the time these days. Looking back, he wondered where his life had gone. This Kira case was driving him insane with worry, but he couldn't let it show.
And he still didn't know who the killer was. While he sat there, wondering, he heard muffled footsteps. Raito. His eyes flicked open from their previously closed state. He took a deep breath, not quite ready to face the world.
But too late. Following Raito came the whole crew. The Kira investigation team was soon all behind him, their minds obviously clamouring to ask L the same question:
'Have you got any further?' With all these people relying on him, he could feel that he would at least have to say a few words of encouragement. This he hated.
But Raito spoke for him. L heard none of it, but the team seemed encouraged, and went about their daily work. L didn't know what he would do without Light. But none the less, he was one of his prime suspects.
L felt quite ashamed. He had gotten quite attached to the younger boy, and felt guilty for looking into him. But none the less, Raito was very likely to be Kira. The younger boy was watching him, L noted. He seemed... eager. Suspiciously so.
There was an alarm. What? Watari. He had deleted the data. That could only mean one thing... Watari was dead.
Watari had been his mentor, almost like a father figure. L was gripped by shock.
But... by something else as well. While the rest of the workforce was panicking, L felt a pain grip his chest. And then he saw Raito's face. And he knew.
After all these years, all these childish tendencies, he was dying. He always knew he would die young. After all, there was no other option in the job he took.
But, he was sad to say, he'd let people die himself, not caring. He'd never cared for anyone else. And this had been his last job. Two words lurched to escape his mouth. 'I've failed'. But they never came.
