Derek sighed as he hugged Savannah good-bye. Instead of their planned evening together they were both being called back to their respective jobs.
"I love you," Savannah whispered.
Derek pulled her tightly against him, savoring these few seconds with his girlfriend. But there was something that he needed to ask her - the elephant in the room that both of them had been ignoring all evening. "Even after I shot a kid on national tv?"
"He was a killer. You shot a killer. Of course I love you. If anything, I love you even more because I know that you are willing to do the hard things in life to do right."
Derek pulled back and looked at her. "You serious?"
"Dead serious." She paused, then added, "That might not have been the best phrasing for this situation, but you get the point."
"Yeah, I do."
This must be true love. That kind of sincerity can't be faked.
He leaned forward and kissed her, never more thankful for her than at that moment. Then he slowly went to his car, got in, and pulled out of the driveway. It was time to get back to work.
