A Happy Past: Meeting Martha

Martha Morse was always a lively girl. She loved to play outdoors on the rolling Scottish hills. Today was no different than any other day for twelve-year-old Martha. Miss Crow, her governess gently shook her awake. Martha got out of bed and went to the clothespress to get dressed. She tied on her apron and walked to the hearth. After breakfast she went and said hello to Mum. "Good morning, Mum." Martha said cheerfully. "Good morning, Martha. You do remember your sister is coming to visit today do you?" Mum answered. "Nay. O' coarse not. She is my sister after all." Martha replied. Martha's sister older sister Grisie was coming to visit. She was going to bring Martha baby niece with her. Martha was excited. Though Grisie lived close by Martha rarely got to see her. Her brothers who were away at school in Perth were coming home too. "Martha!" Miss Crow called, "Come we must get some fresh air before you start your copywork." Martha ran out of Mum's room and into the nursery. Miss Cow was standing there with the brush in her hand. She handed it to Martha. "Come now Martha dear. Brush your hair before our walk." Diligently she yanked the brush through her tangled curls. When she was done she laid the brush on the nursery table. They walked downstairs and out the door. The summer dew sparkled in the early morning sun. The scent of heather perfumed the air. Martha inhaled the sweet scent. She couldn't think of anything that smelled better than heather. "Miss Crow let's walk to Creag and back," Martha suggested. Miss Crow agreed. They walked around in the fresh morning air for a little while. Once back in the house Miss Crow set Martha on working on her copywork. "Miss Crow, may I work on my knitting this afternoon, since I can't work on it this morning?" Martha asked. "Well you may if ye'd rather not spend time with your sister and brothers." Miss Crow smiled. "Och, nay. Can I work on it now then," Martha said. "May I," she corrected, "Nay, you may not. Get to work now." Martha leaned down and carefully copied the verses trying hard not to spill any ink on the page. When she finished it was almost dinnertime. From the window she saw two carriages coming up the hill toward the Stone House. Quickly Martha and Miss Crow changed into their best dresses. They hurried downstairs into the parlor where Mum was waiting anxiously to see the rest of her children. All of the sudden there was an explosion of noise as her brothers and sister entered the house.
