"Turn to page 456." That was the first sentence I heard while moving away from a world of normal people, science, and legit civilization. A modern one, rather. The first time I discovered a veil around the real world, a world of gods and monsters. From looking at Ms. Dastur's face, I could tell there was something strange about her eye. The way slits flashed in them. After about 0.5 seconds, they turned to normal. It was the strangest thing. But upon seeing this I knew for sure something was wrong in this world. It happened almost every day. When I was six I saw a woman in white, screaming. I went towards her, but she vanished. At the age of seven, in kindergarten I could've sworn I saw a man with only one eye. At eight I saw a bird with a lady's head, flying close to my bedroom window. And then the year after that…. Well, you get the picture.
Anyway, at this time I was attending MSA6, a small school in Culver City, Los Angeles. I sat in the corner of the room, with my best friend Jake. He had just gone to a party yesterday night, so he was super tired. I myself went to one yesterday, but it was a birthday party for my friend Kai, before his flight to Taiwan. Kai was Taiwanese. His mom was nice but a bit strict, you know, "Go to bed now or no video games for a week." The thing is he hasn't seen his dad in 13 years. Apparently he was only there for his birth, and then disappeared. He has a stepdad, but Kai has always wondered where his real dad was.
I on the other hand, was missing a dad. My mom ran away two years after I was born. When her boyfriend (my step dad) took a DNA test, he wasn't my biological dad. It seemed, as the test confirmed, nobody in America, or in the world, was my dad. The blood they found in me wasn't exactly human. But strangely, instead of investigating, they closed the case. I live with my dad and a step mom, but I too have wondered who I truly am.
It was kind of the same for Jake. He could never find his dad. Jake's mom said he went on a private airplane to Bermuda, but never landed. Rescue teams were baffled because they couldn't even find a trace of an airplane, much less a sunken one under the waves. Jake was persistent though, and he checked all the phone books, kept the home phone next to his bed, asked all his relatives and the police station. Jake even asked his mom a million times to hire private investigators. He too has a stepdad, but shares the curiosity we have on the outside world.
Anyway, enough background checks. I was staring at Ms. Dastur's eyes until she yelled, "What are you looking at?!" "Your eyes are changing to slits, lady," I said rudely. "What's up with that?" Jake woke up from his day dreams in his seat next to me. "Well I'll have you know, young man, I am having trouble coping with my new contacts." said Ms. Dastur. "Sorry, but that makes no sense at all." I exclaimed. Jake nudged me on the shoulder. I did have a talking back problem. I shut my mouth as she went on and on about respect.
