A Bad Track?
There was only a glance by Inspector Javert to the squalid guy, who entered this office.
The stranger took a deep bow. "I've heard you're looking for Jean Valjean, Monsieur", said he. "May be I know where you will find him." His open hand expected a coin, but received none.
"There is a new gardener at the Bernardines-Convent carrying the roses and pleasing the nuns. People say he is a holy man, who performs miracles."
"Well, Monsieur", answered Inspector Javert with a very low, but dangerous-sounding voice, "at next you will tell me, this con have conjured a pink elephant."
