What Chin Ho Didn't Know
Chin Ho didn't know what was going on with Kono. What she was into or how deep she was involved. He didn't know why she didn't talk to him. He didn't know why he didn't tell Five-0 about her issues. But there was a lot more that Chin Ho didn't know.
He didn't know he was the third person in Captain Fryer's office, yelling at the man for the Internal Affairs ruling. Lieutenant Commander McGarrett was the first, literally threatening the man. Fryer gave back just as hard, threatening everything from Five-0 dissolution to Steve's life. Steve finally left just so he wouldn't kill Fryer. Detective Williams came in next, pleading to Fryer's parental tendencies. Fryer was kind to him—he liked Danny, so he was softer in talking him out of the room. Chin Ho didn't know he wasn't the only one that argued for Kono.
He didn't know that he wasn't the only one Kono didn't answer her phone for. She had at least a call a day from Jenna, Steve, and Danny. She couldn't face them any more than she could face Chin Ho.
He didn't know that he wasn't the only one who dropped in on Kono unexpectedly. The others didn't attempt to go to her house, though; they didn't think they were close enough to her to invade her privacy like that. But Jenna found out her favorite lunch hang out and made sure she was always there, ordering Kono's favorite dish and having a salad. Jenna never brought up Five-0 or Kono's suspension, but just girl-talked her. Steve found out her favorite gym and dropped in on her boxing practices. They didn't talk, other than tips on fighting, but sparred. It was good for Kono to relieve pressure like that. Danny showed up early one morning with Grace for a joint surf lesson. Danny, like Jenna and Steve, didn't bring up anything other than their shared activity. He and Grace quickly made it a weekly meeting. Chin Ho didn't know that he wasn't helping—that the others' silent support and waiting for her to talk was more supportive than any of his sermons and hatred of her new friends.
He didn't know that the team was relying on him to ask the tough questions, to be the one in whom Kono confided. He didn't know they expected him to be the one who got to the bottom of her problems. He didn't know they expected updates from him. Chin Ho still didn't know why he didn't tell the team anything.
He didn't know he wasn't the only one in his family who liked to protect others. He had tried to protect his uncle, his cousin, his fiancé, everyone. She was trying to protect him and her Five-0 family. Chin Ho didn't know she was clean and she was doing this for him.
He didn't know that when Steve was yelling at him, and later at Kono, it was because Steve was frustrated that he hadn't done more for her. That Steve was yelling at himself for not talking to her and not finding out about her being in trouble. That Steve was also berating himself for Kono not being comfortable enough with him to tell him of her troubles. That Danny, watching and listening to the entire spectacle, didn't stop Steve because Danny could tell Steve was really yelling at himself. That Danny was feeling the same things as Steve. Chin Ho didn't know he wasn't the only one feeling guilty.
Chin Ho didn't know he wasn't the only one who cared about Kono.
Little dribble after the last episode on Hawaii Five-0, Ma'eme'e, Season 2, Episode 5. Like most people, I was pretty frustrated with it. But I reasoned that even if we hadn't SEEN or HEARD the rest of the team caring about Kono, it was out of their character to NOT care. So, this came out! :D
I know some of you don't agree, but please flame responsibly.
As always, Five-0, it's characters, etc are not mine. If they were, well, I wouldn't be here, would I?
