"I see that you applied for the department of magical law enforcement, Miss Granger." Kingsley Shacklebolt's deep voice was smooth and reassuring.
"Yes, that's right," said Hermione.
"Unfortunately," Shacklebolt continued, "we don't have any vacancies at this time."
"But it's the largest department you have!"
"Yes, well, owing to the lateness of your application," here Shacklebolt peered down at Hermione in a disapproving manner, "all the positions are already filled."
"Oh."
"Which is a great shame, what with a mind like yours."
"I, well, thank you."
"Which is why I'm offering you an alternative position until another vacancy opens up in law."
"What is it?"
"I'm getting to that. Are you aware that Newt Scamander recently passed away?"
"Oh yes, it was a terrible loss, I've read all his works-"
"Yes, well we'd like you to replace him."
"In the department for the regulation and control of magical creatures!"
"Yes. Newt held a number of offices when he died and we'd like you to take over all of them. Will you take the job?"
Hermione paused, but only for a second. "Yes."
"Excellent. Your new responsibilities are the house elf relocation office, the centaur liaison office and of course helping out in the dragon research and restraint bureau."
Kingsley said the last part rather fast and it took a moment for Hermione to realise what he had said. But Kingsley had already started speaking again.
"There's one more thing."
Hermione eyed him warily. "Yes?"
"We decided that's Newt's responsibilities were too much for one young person, so you'll be sharing your role with another brilliant young witch."
There was a knock at the door.
"Hello Hermione."
Hermione turned around. At the door stood a witch in bright yellow robes with what looked like radishes dangling from her earrings. "Hello, Luna."
