Break Up In The End

Pairing: Kana & Hatori (Hari)

Disclaimer: I don't own Fruits Basket...even if I want to!

AN: It's been a while since I've done a song fic, and I'm kind of obsessed with Fruits Basket at the moment, so here is a song fic between Kana and Hari…..it just breaks my heart about their tragic love story regardless of the fact that he still ends up happy with Mayuko...I hope you enjoy! ~HRD

Post AN: I had to change this due to lyrics being involved, but please, listen to Break Up In The End by Cole Swindell to fully enjoy the story the way that I wanted it to be read. I changed up the lyrics so they're not copyrighted but between paragraphs is where the stanzas/verses were originally intended to be, and hopefully you'll still be able to read it and love it and be able to see how beautifully tragic Hari and Kana's love story is. 3

Hatori sat in his office at his desk, his head resting carefully in his left hand. My, how interesting things are, with the curse broken finally. He looked over to the picture of Kana sitting there on his shelf. He reached over to pick it up, and glanced at it fondly. Ahhhh the memories...

He remembered the first conversation he'd had with her. She'd playfully asked him what the snow turned into when it melted. He'd thought he knew everything, and had gotten irritated with her for asking such a silly question as that. "It'll become water of course." She laughed and had told him he'd been wrong. "It becomes spring." For the first time in his life, he hadn't felt like a cold, frozen person. He'd finally found his spring.

I'll introduce you to my mom and dad and tell them that I think I love you.

The first time she'd seen him change into his zodiac form, she hadn't even batted an eye at the fact that he was a sea horse. She had freaked out about how to take care of him and help him. "Water! No, sea water!? Which one!? What do I do Hatori!?" After that had happened, things became more clear to her why he always held her away at arms length. "You were afraid, right? You don't have to be afraid anymore. I won't reject you. I want to be by your side."

Even if I knew you'd be the one that got away from me, I would still go back and choose to meet you and love you. Even if I knew you'd be my best and worst mistake, I'd still choose to make it with you over and over, time after time. Even though we destined break up in the end.

It was the happiest two months of his life. He'd finally felt like he'd been forgiven and rescued. They were happy and in love, and it was as if he were in a dream. Her laugh. Her smile. It lit up his world.

But of course, like most good things, this dream became a nightmare. Like everyone in the zodiac, they needed permission from God to interact with anyone from the "outside". Naturally, being in love, they'd wanted to get married. Akito wouldn't have any of it. "How could I give Hatori to you! What sort of trick do you think you're trying to pull! You can't even get rid of the curse! You aren't needed!" That was also the last day he'd had full sight from his left eye. "If Hatori's eye becomes blind, it's because of you! It's your fault!"

Evenif I knew you'd be the one that got away from me, I would still go back and choose to meet you and love you. Even if I knew you'd be my best and worst mistake, I'd still choose to make it with you over and over, time after time. Even though we destined break up in the end.

He remembered the cold days that followed, like the cold had finally frozen the spring. Anything they tried, she kept crying. Slowly, he watched the girl he loved crumble, all because he'd dared to ask Akito to love an "outsider". "You should erase her memory." Akito told him that it was her memories of him that were making her sad. "In reality, she wants to be released from those memories. She wants to forget you." How he'd struggled with that burden. To erase himself from the memories of the woman he'd loved, and who'd loved him back. The hardest part was when he'd gone to erase her memories, and she'd said, "I failed to protect you. I'm sorry...I'm so sorry." The one who should have apologized was him.

You know if you come over, I'd have to let you in, even knowing that we'll break up in the end.

All he had wanted was for her to be happy, to meet someone that could make her happy. No matter how horrible his life might have turned out, not matter if he'd spent his whole life as unmelted snow or died, he wanted her to be happy.

I'd do it over and over again, time after time, even though we're destined to break up in the end.

He went to put the picture back, but realized that now, he had a new future. The curse was broken, and he'd met someone whom he could really truly develop feelings for. Thank you, Kana. Thank you for teaching me how to love.

"Hari! What are you doing?! We're going to be late!" an excited female voice said from the doorway. Mayuko had already packed most of their stuff in the car. She came up to him and sat in his lap, her arms going behind his head. "What's wrong?"

He shook his head, a slow smile crossing his lips. "Nothing."

She bent to kiss him lightly on the lips. "I love you, Hari."

"I love you, too, Mayu." He put his arms around her, and kissed her back. "Now, let's get this vacation going!"

"Okinawa, here we come!" Mayuko said excitedly, jumping off his lap and running towards the car. Hatori just chuckled, walking after her.

And just like that, he'd found a second spring, a second thawing, and a second chance. This time, it'll last a lifetime.

I had so much fun writing this! I hope you guys like it. Fruits Basket is always near and dear to my heart, and I always cry when I read this series or watch the anime!
