Robbin had waddled, her 8 month old pregnant belly was too big to allow her to walk normally, downstairs for a cup of tea when it'd happened. She had felt a searing pain tearing through her body. She doubled over and fell to the ground, gasping for air. No, she thought, please don't take her away. The last thing she remembered was reaching for the phone…
The doctors had told Barney and Robin that it was a miracle that she was pregnant, Dr. Sonia had told her a couple of years earlier that she would never have kids. They had also told them that it would be even more of a miracle if the baby made it to full term. Robin and Barney had taken every precaution: she had taken a sabbatical from work to avoid stress, they had gone to weekly doctor's appointments, and Barney had made Robin rest as much as she could. Now Barney sat in a waiting room in the hospital, cradling his head in his hands, and thinking it had all been for nothing; their baby wasn't going to make it.
Marshall and Lily burst through the waiting room's door, followed closely by Ted. When Lily saw Barney she stopped dead in her tracks, she had never seen the cheerful and inappropriate man look so defeated. After the initial shock wore off she walked over to her friend and put her arms around him. Barney just laid his head in her shoulder and wept silently.
"How is she?" she asked "Have the doctors said anything?"
"They just took her away to the OR as soon as we got here and they won't tell me anything. I don't… I don't even know if they're still alive."
"It's going to be ok Barney, " said Ted "Robin is the strongest woman I know. She'll get through this."
"Yes." Added Marshall "Plus, that baby has your genes and Robin's. She's going to be the most stubborn girl in New York city. She is going to make it through on sheer stubbornness."
Barney was still worried out of his mind, but he couldn't help smiling at his friends' words of encouragement.
Another half hour passed, during which Lily brought everyone coffee from a vending machine down the hall, before a doctor came through the door.
"Mr. Stinson?"
"Me!" said Barney standing up "That's me! Is my wife ok? Is our daughter ok?"
"Congratulations sir," said the doctor with a smile "you're a dad!"
Barney was out of the room and running down the hall before the doctor could even blink. He reached the information desk in what was probably record time.
"Robin Scherbatsky, please."
"Room 214 sir"
"Thank you"
He knocked on the door of room 214 before pocking his head in. Barney felt the air rush through his lungs and realized he hadn't been able to breathe properly until he saw his wife. Robin was on the bed, her back propped up on a pillow, and holding a pink bundle in her arms. A tear managed to escape down Barney's cheek before he walked over to the bed and hugged his wife. He kissed the top of her head and just stood like that for a while, breathing in her scent, making sure she was really alive.
"I'm so glad you're ok. I love you so much."
"I love you too, honey" said Robin with a smile.
At that moment the bundle in Robin's arm made a sniffling noise, which made Barney look down.
"Hello there beautiful" he said, stroking his daughter's head.
The baby in Robin's arms shifted and Barney was able to get a look at her face. She was beautiful, with a head of black hair, and endless blue eyes. Just like her mother.
"You're perfect"
"She is, isn't she? We made her Barney. You and I, we made something perfect."
"Welcome to the world Natasha."
Barney smiled. His girls were beautiful, and they were safe. In that moment life was perfect.
