Act I, Scene I
I knew I loved you before I met you.
Cherry blossom trees. Beautiful in the spring, the way they send petals floating to the ground, as if the earth isn't worthy to cradle their soft nature. The way they create ripples in the waters of crystal lakes, repeating, again and again, the smallest waves that yet seem to travel across the waters with the most dignity and grace.
"Kaoru.will you please just put the damn dress on?!"
.with dignity and grace, strong yet gentle, firm yet fluid.
"God, Kaoru, have you no idea of what your mother shall do to me if I even think of allowing you to step into Church two minutes past the first prayer?" Megumi waited, silently and tapped her fingers on Kaoru's low wooden dresser. Exasperated and quite fed up, she finally sighed heavily and left the room with an air of irritation.
Kaoru's mind slowly drifted back to the present as she realized what was occurring. The Capulets always dressed promptly before ten and arrived at the Church doors on time, prayer books in hand and rosaries around wrists. Kaoru sighed deeply, wishing she could simply continue to stare out into her parents' Japanese garden.
"Such beauty," she reflected, "yet it feels as if I happen to be the only one in this entire world who seems to notice it."
-------- Soaking in the deep light of the sun, filling his whole body with its tender warmth, Kenshin felt as if his entire body was being engulfed by one giant round sphere of light. The tips of his fingers and his toes tingled as he wound slick blades of grass around his thumbs, wishing he could lie in this serene field forever, until time stopped and he no longer existed.
"Kenshin!"
"No, not now Sano." Keshin wished. "The sun is just spreading over the northern hills. That's the best part of the entire day."
"Kenshin, I really do not feel like playing games right now. Your father made me come out here and get you, and if I go back without you, it'll be my ass on the line."
Kenshin silently chuckled to himself. Sanouske could never enter a situation and just leave it at that. With Sano, the whole situation was boring unless he added some of his own flare into it, his own wise cracks or findings of amusement.
He knew he needed to get going, leave for Church and represent the Montague family properly as he was expected to, but it wasn't that simple when Nature just happened to be so particularly enticing at that moment. Kenshin couldn't just get up and leave - it wasn't that simple. He felt he owed a debt of gratitude to the land that had comforted him for that last hour. He needed to bid farewell to his favorite field, his favorite stream, his favorite soft spot of earth, his favorite cherry tree.
And so, at that same time, Kaoru Capulet and Kenshin Montague both reflected on the immense beauty Nature held, and wished that there was another to share in their joys. Yet Fate would have it so that their meeting was doomed to fail from the very start. However, it could have been Fate they chose, but could not it also have been Fortune?
